New brown recycling bin for Doncaster residents
PA MediaDoncaster households are set to gain an extra bin for recycling in the coming months.
New legislation says paper and card must be collected separately to other recyclable materials, meaning another bin will be required by residents in the city.
Council cabinet members are due to finalise plans to provide a brown recycling bin in addition to the existing blue bins and green boxes.
The new brown bin will be used for liquid cartons, tins, cans and foil, empty aerosols, plastic bottles and lids, plastic pots, tubs and trays, lids from glass bottles and jars and plastic bags and film.
The blue bin will remain solely for paper and card. Glass will still be collected using the green box, with garden waste remaining in green bins.
National legislation says all local councils must have separate kerbside collections in place for dry recyclables and food waste.
Doncaster, Barnsley, Rotherham and Sheffield are exempt from food waste collections until 2040 as they are mid-contract with Veolia.
Councillor Glyn Jones, council portfolio holder for environment, said: "Adding a separate bin to collect paper and card will put Doncaster in line with national legislation and many of our neighbouring towns and cities who have already introduced these changes.
"We understand some residents may have preferred not to have another bin, but with all councils now being required by law to collect paper and card separately we felt that a new bin would be the best and most convenient option."
Clear guidance will be given to all residents on the changes, the council said.
A full rollout of the new 180-litre brown bins is expected from autumn, with collections expected to begin from spring 2027.
The council's cabinet is due to approve the plans at a meeting on 20 May.
