Crews tackle fire in North York Moors forest

A fire has broken out in a forest in the North York Moors National Park, according to the fire service.

Five fire engines and specialist equipment are fighting the blaze in Wykeham Forest, seven miles (11km) from Scarborough, which has spread 20 x 20m (65 x 65ft) among trees, bushes and undergrowth.

The fire was first reported by a passing cyclist at about 11:41 BST.

Crews from Scarborough, Robin Hood's Bay, Sherburn, Pickering, Filey, Tadcaster, Kirkbymoorside and Thirsk remain at the scene.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service urged people to avoid the area.

Wykeham Forest is a popular area for hiking and mountain biking, and has a raptor viewing point for birdwatching. It is managed by Forestry England.
