A five-year-old girl has died after she was knocked down by a van in Newry on Sunday night.

Police said they received a report of a collision involving a black Ford Tourneo and a child in the Springfarm Heights area at approximately 21:25 BST.

Detective Inspector Stewart said the girl was taken to hospital but later died from her injuries.

The Carnagat Road remains closed at its junctions with Springfarm Heights and Stony Hill.

The driver of the van, a 40-year-old woman, was arrested at the scene and remains in custody.

Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone who may have captured footage of what happened to contact them.
