Murder arrest after shooting at travellers' site

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a fatal shooting at a travellers' site.

Wiltshire Police were called to the site at Calcutt near Cricklade at about 08:15 BST on Sunday to reports that a man in his 30s had been shot.

Police have named the victim as 36-year-old Jimmy Ward, and said he was declared dead at the scene.

The force said two other men, aged 53 and 29, were also arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of assisting an offender following a vehicle stop on the A419, meaning five people are now in custody being questioned over the incident.

A 74-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman were arrested on Sunday on suspicion of assisting an offender and possession of a firearm.

On Tuesday, a video scene by the BBC was posted on social media showing Ward pictured on a screen in Times Square, in New York, paying tribute.

A cordon remains at the site which is likely to be in place over the coming days, police said, and added there were be an increased police presence.

Det Ch Insp Phil Walker, senior investigating officer at Wiltshire Police's Major Crime Investigation Team, said the murder arrest is a "significant development in our investigation".

"Jimmy's next of kin have been informed of this development and my thoughts continue to be with them. They are being supported by specially trained officers.

"I'd like to thank the local community for their support and patience since Sunday.

"We understand this incident has caused significant concern, so please consider speaking with officers about any information or concerns you may have."
