Multi-storey car park to close ahead of demolition
GoogleA multi-storey car park in a town will close permanently from 5 May ahead of its planned demolition, a council has confirmed.
The 1960s Easton Street multi-storey car park in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, has deteriorated significantly and reached the end of its operational life.
Buckinghamshire Council said independent analysis found that continuing to operate or fully repair the structure would require around £3m of investment.
Robert Carington, cabinet member for resources, said that this "would not represent value for money for residents".
The council said the closing the car park ahead of demolition was the "most responsible long-term option" to protect public safety.
The upper levels had already been closed due to structural concerns.
The council is hoping to reassure residents, businesses and visitors that there is sufficient capacity at other nearby car parks including Wycombe Swan Car Park and Railway Place Car Park.
Signage will be in place to help direct drivers, with updated parking information available online.
A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) has been put in place which will provide additional Blue Badge parking spaces in nearby locations.
It will also introduce designated pick-up and drop-off points, alongside existing pay and display bays.
The Easton Street site has been identified as a key location within the council's High Wycombe Regeneration Strategy and is central to the Easton Quarter Vision.
It has been earmarked for future redevelopment with new homes.
Carington added: "Closing it now allows us to manage risks responsibly, avoid further financial losses and unlock a key site for High Wycombe's future regeneration."
Demolition is expected to begin later this year.
The council said it would continue to provide updates as plans progress.
