A man is fighting for his life after being attacked in the street in Smethwick.

The victim, who is in his 50s and understood to be Sikh, was seriously assaulted in St Paul's Road on Sunday at 20:30 BST.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested in Leeds earlier on suspicion of attempted murder, West Midlands Police said.

The force said they were keeping an "open mind" as to the motive of the attack.

Video footage filmed in the aftermath and seen by the BBC shows an injured man being helped by members of the public. He remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A 45-year-old man arrested shortly after has been released and will face no further action.

Detectives want anyone who was in the Tollhouse Way or St Pauls area at the time or has any information to get in touch.
