The safety notice urged "clear messaging" the site must not be entered under any circumstances

Schools are being warned that a derelict hotel where children have been seen regularly entering is at risk of sudden collapse.

In a safety notice, they were told the Cygnet Hotel in Sandown is now in an "extremely dangerous condition" and parts could fail "suddenly and without warning", according to a structural engineer's report.

Drugs paraphernalia, sharps and asbestos have also been found on the grounds, the notice said.

The hotel has been hit by a string of fires in recent years, with the most recent being in October 2025.

Isle of Wight Council said the owner commissioned an independent structural engineer to survey the building at the council's request.

It also said they issued advice to parents and carers through schools to remind young people of the dangers of entering derelict buildings.

They did not provide an answer when asked for further details of the independent engineer's report.

Locals who spoke to the BBC said they had seen children who looked about 12 regularly going in and out of the site.

One woman, who did not want to give her name, said: "My neighbours are constantly talking about people going in and out.

"It's really worrying because the place is a hazard. Someone's going to get hurt there, fairly soon - or the building might just collapse on them.

"We as residents are really concerned about it."

Items such as discarded soft drink bottles were visible on the grounds when the BBC visited.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said it "vehemently advise residents avoid entering the premises".

The BBC understands police officers have also been told not to enter the premises under any circumstances.

The Cygnet Hotel has seen several fires in recent years, including one in October last year which destroyed the roof.

A 14-year-old boy, who was arrested on suspected of arson with intent to endanger life, is now taking part in a youth diversion programme, according to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary.

A spokesperson for Isle of Wight Council said it was working with the owner of the building to ensure appropriate steps are taken to make the site safe and secure, which may include demolition.
