Fathers are being encouraged to master ponytails, plaits and buns to help them feel more confident styling their children's hair.

The Brews & Braids sessions run by Telford Family Hubs at The Anstice in Madeley combine haircare lessons with tea, coffee and the chance to meet other dads.

Organisers say the sessions aim to help fathers with everyday tasks like brushing, detangling and tying back their children's hair and were inspired by a similar scheme Family Hubs staff spotted online.

Kirsty Thomas, from the Family Hubs, said the sessions were about much more than creating hairstyles. "It's not just about putting hair up, it's about the hair care," she said.

"It's about if there's any difficulties or different kinds of hair, those sorts of things."

Participants begin by practising on mannequin heads before being invited to bring their own children to the final session to try out their new skills.

Professional hairdresser Neomi Owen said the sessions had a personal meaning for her. Her dad used to take her to a hairdresser every morning before school because he did not know how to tie her hair back.

Learning to style a child's hair is about more than appearance, she said.

"I think that's such a special bond if you've got the dad there brushing their hair and putting it up and having that moment with their daughters. That's something that's never going to be forgotten."

The workshops also offer advice on using the right brushes, combs and accessories.

Sessions will be held on 10 July and 24 July from 09:30 BST to 11:00 BST and can be booked through Telford Family Hubs.
