Suspected human remains have been found by road workers close to a motorway bridge, police have said.

Greater Manchester Police said the discovery was made close to a bridge between junctions 3 and 4 of the M67 on Tameside at about 23:00 BST on Monday.

A force spokesperson said officers were working with "specialist teams to understand the circumstances behind this incident".

It resulted in the closure in both directions between the junctions before the westbound carriageway reopened. National Highways said the incident had now concluded but the road will remain closed both ways for planned overnight roadworks as part of the A57 link roads scheme.
