Local sports clubs net £219k to improve facilities

Hornsea Promenade Bowls Club are among the six sports clubs given funding

Several sports clubs have received more than £219,000 to upgrade their facilities.

In Hornsea, the local football, cricket, bowling and bowls clubs were awarded a total of £132,845. Meanwhile, Hessle Lawn Tennis Club and Hull Cycle Speedway Club received a total of £86,432.

The funding comes from East Riding of Yorkshire Council's commuted sums, which are developer contributions set aside to support community improvement projects.

Councillor Nick Coultish said: "These projects will improve opportunities for local people to take part in sport and community activities, while helping clubs provide better facilities for their members and visitors."

how the funding has been split:

  • Hornsea Town Football Club will use the £74,069 to improve drainage and prevent water logging at Hollis Recreation Ground
  • Hornsea Cricket Club was awarded £48,474 to install new all-weather cricket nets, replacing the existing "unsafe" nets
  • Hornsea Bowling Club was given £16,283 to undertake renovation works to the outdoor bowling green, making it more durable and reliable
  • Hornsea Promenade Bowls Club received £6,020 to refurbish its clubhouse, and convert an existing lean-to into a weatherproof storage area
  • Hessle Lawn Tennis Club was awarded £45,000 to install new LED floodlights and redevelop an unused court. A previously derelict court has also been converted into three new pickleball courts
  • Hull Cycle Speedway Club was given £41,432 to improve clubhouse facilities at its Hessle Raceway site
