Part of A38 to be reduced to 50mph for gas works

A temporary 50mph speed limit is set to be introduced on a section of the A38 in Derbyshire for 20 months as part of planned gas works.

National Highways said it will begin work on the A5132 Carriers Road bridge, which runs over the A38 at Egginton, and will introduce a 50mph limit on the A road while it "re‑routes and replaces" a gas line that runs through the bridge.

The works will begin in mid‑August and are expected to end in April 2028, National Highways said.

It will be completed "in phases" on both the A5132 bridge and the A38, with lanes narrowed and the temporary speed limit monitored by speed cameras.

The A38 will remain open during the day in both directions throughout the works, but National Highways said there will be "some overnight closures", with the dates yet to be decided.

National Highways also said it will close one lane in each direction "towards the end of the scheme" to allow crews to work in the middle of the A38.

The A5132 Carriers Road bridge will be fully closed in both directions between September 2026 and July 2027, but pedestrian access will be maintained.

National Highways said it will provide fully signed diversion routes for traffic affected by the bridge closure.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "Many of the roads and structures we manage were built around 60 years ago and need renewing to ensure they remain fit for purpose for generations to come.

"This renewal work, which includes strengthening the foundations of the bridge, is essential to keep drivers safe."
