Five people are in hospital following a crash involving a lorry and two other vehicles.

It happened on the northbound carriageway of the A1 between Seaton Burn, North Tyneside, and Stannington in Northumberland shortly before 16.10 BST on Wednesday, leading to the road being closed in both directions.

It follows a number of fatalities in 2026 on the stretch between Newcastle and Berwick leading to renewed calls for the single carriageway sections of that section to be dualled.

North East Ambulance Service said its crews "treated five casualties before conveying to hospital with head and body injuries."
