Dragon boats to race in dock for charity
Getty ImagesChinese dragon boat racing is coming to Grimsby docks this summer.
Ten boats, each with 10 rowers, will take part in the challenge in Alexandra Dock to raise money for charity.
The event is being coordinated by Grimsby Rotary Club and will take place between 10:00 and 16:00 BST on Sunday 12 July.
Club secretary Gary Allen said the races had already proved popular - with all entry places filled by February. He said the event would create a "bit of a razzmatazz".
Getty/Christopher Furlong"We've got local solicitors, local builders, the company working on Corporation Bridge, local charities, so there's a right mixture," Allen said.
Dragon boat racing has ancient Chinese origins and its history has been traced back more than 2,000 years.
Alongside the racing action, there will be live music, food and drink stalls and other family entertainment during the day.
"It's a straight piece of water between the back of Sainsbury's to the Corporation Bridge, they're going to start at the Corporation Bridge and race down towards the river head," Allen said.
The club hopes the event will become a regular fixture in future, and says it has "enormous potential" to raise funds for charities and community organisations in the area.
