A "feisty" young lioness has died at a wildlife park in Kent, it has been announced.

Port Lympne Reserve, near Hythe, said two-year-old Amali developed a life-threatening intestinal obstruction and became critically ill.

The park said its veterinary team performed emergency surgery, followed by intensive post-operative care in May, but the African lion did not survive.

A Port Lympne spokesperson said: "Amali was a larger-than-life character who will be deeply missed."

The wildlife park added: "Despite the tireless efforts of both our keepers and veterinary staff, her condition continued to deteriorate, and the difficult decision was made to euthanise her to prevent further suffering.

"Our thoughts remain with the dedicated keepers and veterinary team who worked so hard to give Amali every possible chance."

The park said Amali was born at Port Lympne two years ago to parents Lily and Hunter, alongside her sister, Jamila.

A spokesperson added: "From a young age, Amali was known for her confidence and feisty personality, making her a memorable character among keepers, guests, and her own family alike."

They said Amali and Jamila had become central figures within the pride.

"We are sure her loss will be felt just as profoundly by the pride as it is by all of us who had the privilege of caring for her," they added.
