Aid agency gives £250k to Venezuela relief efforts
UKISARJersey has donated £250,000 to support humanitarian relief efforts following earthquakes in Venezuela, the island's aid organisation has confirmed.
Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA), which is funded by the government, said it had committed £150,000 to the British Red Cross and £100,000 to Save the Children to provide shelter, clean water, medicals supplies, and food to the families affected.
Two earthquakes measuring magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 struck within a minute of each other on Wednesday 24 June, killing more than 3,300 people and injuring thousands of others.
JOA said the funding reflected the island's "commitment to global solidarity by helping those affected by humanitarian crises".
"Our thoughts are with the people of Venezuela as they face the aftermath of this devastating earthquake," said Deputy Carolyn Labey, Minister for International Development and chair of the JOA Commission.
"Jersey's support will help ensure that vital aid reaches those who need it most.
"We also extend our deepest sympathies to Islanders who have family and friends impacted by this disaster," she said.
