Free lunch to mark Armed Forces Day
South Kesteven District CouncilVeterans are being offered a free lunch to celebrate Armed Forces Day.
The meal at the Bourne Corn Exchange on 27 June can be claimed by anyone living in South Kesteven who has served in any branch of the Armed Forces.
It will have guest speakers giving talks on Grimsthorpe Castle's role in parachute operations in World War Two and the history of RAF Cranwell.
South Kesteven District Council said the event reflected the high number of veterans living in the area, with the last census showing that almost 8% of the district's adult population had been in the forces.
Thousands of airborne soldiers flew from airfields around Grantham in 1944 to take part in the D-Day invasion of France and Operation Market Garden - immortalised in the all-star film A Bridge Too Far - in the Netherlands.
Councillor Bridget Ley said: "We are delighted to be celebrating Armed Forces Day with the very people we have committed to support; those who have served our country.
"Armed Forces Day is a special date in the calendar to mark our national debt to those who have served and are still serving."
