Police say people will gather in City Square and Victoria Gardens ahead of the marches

Hundreds of additional police officers will be present in Leeds city centre later ahead of protests by three groups.

UKIP and Yorkshire Patriots, Stand Up To Racism and Palestine Solidarity Campaign all plan demonstrations in the city between 12:00 BST and 15:00 BST.

West Yorkshire Police said additional police powers would be in place during the protests to ensure public safety.

The force said it had met with the organisers of the protests and expected people to gather in City Square and Victoria Gardens for speeches, before marchers follow a route around the city centre.

Assistant Ch Con Damien Miller said: "Our priority is to keep people safe, balancing the rights of those who wish to protest with those who may be impacted by it.

"Criminal offences and any disorder will not be tolerated.

"While there may be some disruption, we want people using the city centre to be reassured that we are all working together to keep it to a minimum."

He said the additional powers would cover the designated area relating to start and finish times, routes for marches and areas for static assemblies.

The route of the marches will include Boar Lane, Duncan St, New Market St, Vicar Lane, Headrow and Park Row.

A number of bus stops and routes will be affected with several diversions in place.
