Jack Moylan scored the winner on his Cardiff City debut as the Bluebirds beat Swindon Town 3-2 to reach the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Swindon started strongly, and took the lead after nine minutes as Louis Millard picked out the bottom corner to put the League Two side ahead.

On 28 minutes Cardiff were presented with a golden opportunity to draw level, as Isaak Davies' cross was handled by Mitch Clark and referee Gavin Ward pointed to the spot. Yousef Salech stepped up and calmly found the bottom corner to level.

And with half-time approaching Cardiff had turned the game on its head, as the hosts caught Swindon on the counter attack. Ashford's cross from wide on the left found Salech, and the striker got ahead of his marker to turn the ball home with a first-time effort.

The Bluebirds should have made it three with the last attack of the half, as Turnbull played through a completely unmarked Ashford, but his effort came crashing back off the crossbar with no defender in the vicinity.

After an uneventful start to the second half, the game burst back into life on 62 minutes as Swindon forward Paul Glatzel was left unmarked at the back-post to turn home a low cross and level.

The fervent travelling support sensed there could be an upset on the cards, as the visitors pushed on looking for a winner, while Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy responded by sending on Moylan for his debut - having signed from Lincoln City for an undisclosed fee earlier in the week.

And it was the move from Barry-Murphy which paid off, as this time Salech turned provided after latching onto the end of a long ball and putting the ball on a plate for Moylan to pick out the top corner on 77 minutes.

There was still time for late drama, and Swindon came the width of a post away from equalising once again, as former Wrexham striker Ollie Palmer got a toe to another dangerous cross from the Robins' left, but saw it bounce back off the woodwork.

Swindon's afternoon got worse as substitute James Debayo was shown two yellow cards in the space of six minutes to earn his marching orders at Cardiff City Stadium.

The draw for the second round of the EFL Cup takes place on Monday evening at around 19:20 BST.

Cardiff City head coach Brian Barry-Murphy told BBC Sport Wales:

"I'm very pleased to get through, it's a competition that was very special to us last season, so the main objective today was to get through to the second round.

"So I'm very pleased to have achieved that. Getting minutes in the legs is important as well.

"Parts we did really well, and parts that we can obviously do better, but where we are in the season, I think that's perfectly normal."
