Grimsby Town opened their season with a victory
Grimsby got off to a winning start at the expense of newly-relegated Exeter with a tightly-contested 1-0 triumph at Blundell Park.
Harvey Rodgers gave the hosts the lead 36 minutes in as he got on the end of a corner from Charles Vernam, with the linesman calling it over the line before it was cleared.
The Mariners were inches away from a second early in the second period as Vernam's cross was headed towards goal by Jake Doyle-Hayes, but the ball bounced just wide of the far post.
Former Grecians goalkeeper Christy Pym was tested for the first time when Exeter skipper Jack Fitzwater got on the end of a corner, with the Mariners goalkeeper stretching to tip the ball over the bar.
Jack Bycroft reacted well to stop a deflected effort from Jamie Walker to keep Grimsby's lead at one.
Jayden Wareham fired over from close range under pressure in the last minute after Pym palmed a cross into his path as the hosts held on for three points.
