![]() You start this historic walk at Newark Castle where King John died in 1216. It was rumoured his death came after eating seafood. Famously Charles I raised his standard in Nottingham. However, Newark was key to his ultimately doomed campaign because of the amount of royalists who lived there. Newark Castle was a royalist stronghold but after Charles I surrendered in 1646 Oliver Cromwell had the castle dismantled. ![]() John Holmes in Newark Market Place However, much of it survived including the keep which was described as the finest in Europe in the 1840s. Move on from the castle to the Governor's House, this was the residence of the Governors of Newark during the sieges of the Civil War. Walk through Newark's market place, one of the largest cobbled market places in the country, and head towards St Mary Magdelene Church. This is the largest parish church in Nottinghamshire and the spire is over 240 feet high. last updated: 21/07/2009 at 15:05 SEE ALSOYou are in: Nottingham > Places > Walks > The Newark walk
