The BBC is not responsible for the content of external websites You start this walk in Trowell near to the Festival Inn. In 1951, during the Festival of Britain, the government announced that the most central village in the country was Trowell. The walk incorporates the old Nottingham canal. It was completed in 1796 to link the city to Derby. It took 20 years to complete but was eventually superseded by the railway. It is now disused and the M1 cuts across it. If you stick to the footpath you cross the stone Swansea Bridge where you can see an old rotting lock and the Trowell Garden Centre. Taking a path up to Bramcote Woods you will see a walled garden with a large sundial, you can stand in the middle and find out the time. Cross Coventry Lane and head up to Stapleford Hill where you will come across the prehistoric Hemlock Stone. Help playing audio/video You can hear John Holmes' walks every Wednesday, 14:00 to 16:00 on BBC Radio Nottingham (95.5 & 103.8FM, DAB and online).last updated: 17/07/2009 at 16:35 SEE ALSOYou are in: Nottingham > Nature > Nature features > The Hemlock Stone walk |
