You start this walk at Newstead Abbey, Byron's ancestral home. ![]() John Holmes at Byron's oak When Byron inherited Newstead Abbey in 1798 he planted an oak tree which has become a place of pilgrimage. Byron also buried his beloved dog Bosun nearby. Leaving Newstead Abbey you join the National Cycle Route (no. six) and head to Linby. To reach Linby Village you need to cross a former slag heap connected to Linby Colliery which was closed in 1988. ![]() Map of the Byron walk This area has now been taken over by nature and is known as The Ranges. Here you'll find a modern day depiction of Byron and his dog. From the top of The Ranges you can see Hucknall and even Nottingham city centre. Leaving Linby you head into Hucknall where you can visit St Mary Magdelene Church, Byron's burial place.
