Please wait while photos are loading... In a sunny corner behind Walney School, a handful of people are working. While the sound of children tooting their way through trumpet lessons drifts in the air, shovels scrunch through gravel and soil. Gail, Paul and volunteers (Eureka gardeners, Walney retained firefighters and the Probation Service) have shifted monumental amounts of building materials this week: 42 tonnes of topsoil and 16 tonnes of crusher run. And there's more topsoil to come. Once again, it was all hands on deck as the materials were delivered to the school playground. (Advice to anyone doing a garden project - check accessibility first!) Express deliveries This week, wood arrived from Barkers of Ulverston ready for building a couple of arches and we've got a wooden arbour. | Gail finishes her seahorse design. |
Work around 'Gail' (the boat) and the bird table is almost finished, plus Gail (the person!) has set a fish statue in concrete and decorated the area with a seahorse made of shells. (Photos coming soon!) 'John the brickie' has finished constructing all the raised beds and is starting to put the paving slabs down. Our landscape gardener Mike Brook was back at the garden, putting in some of the finishing touches... Listen to Mike Brook »
Titchmarsh talking On Thursday, Paul O'Neill visited the Gardeners' World Exhibition at the NEC. He met up with Alan Titchmarsh, who remembered his experience with Ground Force on Walney... Listen to Alan Titchmarsh on Walney, Cartmel, helicopters & his future »
How to help With only a two weeks to go (!!), we still need plenty of help. Just come and help for an hour if you can. There is plenty to do - we'll find something to match your ability. Call Gail on 01228 474291 (or 07801 679757). Click here to view a large photo of the garden | Left: The garden on Friday 13 June. That's John the brickie with his top off. You can just see Hayden (a firefighter) on the right-hand path. |
| Right: Building supplies waiting to be used in the corner of the garden. The shapes on the other side of the fence are school pupils lazing on the grass in their lunch break! |

 | Left: Heap of 'crusher run' (a bizarre name for what looks like gravel to me) waiting to be used. In the foreground is one of the large raised beds which Gail and Suzanne filled with topsoil. |
| Right: Volunteer Hayden (Walney firefighter) sweeps up after we made a mess with all the topsoil. The yellow machine on the right is a 'whacker' to compact the ground before laying the paving slabs. |
