Flowers in the garden

Sensory Garden - update

Work continues on our BBC Voices Project on Walney Island, including our major project with Walney's only secondary school school - the Sensory Garden.

Monday 28 April 2003

The garden has to cater for youngsters with a range of different needs, as well as having a sensory element AND being used to teach everything from growing your own veg and flowers to physiotherapy.

Mike, Robbie and John, who've done the bulk of the heavy work on the garden site have made some headway on digging the trenches where some of the raised beds are going to go. Work continues tomorrow. We'll even be mixing some concrete for footings this week with any luck.

While the school, was on holidays, we took Diane and Veronica from the special Needs department on a whistle-stop tour ofn a couple of South Cumbrian Sensory Gardens, in Ulverston and Grange, and stopped off at a couple of garden centres as well, to get some ideas.

Here's a flavour of what happened:

Right: Gail is crazy about dogs - she'd love this for her own garden - but will she put one in the sensory garden?
