Plymouth Argyle missed the opportunity to go top of League One after losing at home to one of this season's surprise packages Burton Albion, while Cambridge drew with AFC Wimbledon.

In League Two, it was a better day for Cheltenham, Bristol Rovers and York City fans who all saw their side win at home this afternoon in League Two as the tables continue to take shape.

West County pair Cheltenham Town and Bristol Rovers find themselves in the top three of League Two after their respective home wins.

York City's win over Gillingham sees them leapfrog the Gills into fourth while Salford have now jumped into the play-off places after their emphatic win at local rivals Oldham.

The Latics drop the 20th, just above Exeter City who miss the opportunity to move away from the relegation zone.

Rochdale are up to 16th after victory at Fleetwood while Port Vale have dropped into the bottom two having not played today.

Man of the match and Salford winger Luke Molyneux told Sky Sports:

"I enjoyed it. It was a crazy start, it was the first time I have played in a derby like this so it was hectic at the start. We managed the game well, particularly in the second half, but the most important thing there was three points.

"We had a tough start at the start of the season, but we are getting the momentum now and you could see today that everything is starting to click."

Midfielder Brendan Wiredu added:

"We, all of us as a team, deserved this. We showed how dominant and savvy we are. We are here to get promoted. It's simple, that is what we want to do. We have more levels, there is more to come.

"We are an exciting team and this is only the foundation we're building."

Full-time at Boundary Park and Salford have local bragging rights over Oldham Athletic.

At times, it did not look as comfortable as the scoreline suggested but the right side have won this one.

Luke Molyneux broke the deadlock inside five minutes and Kelly N'Mai's delicate chip put Salford 2-0 up.

That two-goal advantage was halved just over a minute later when Calum Kavanagh struck with an accurate left-footed finish.

Brendan Wiredu got the crucial third after Oldham had been guilty of passing up chances 2-1 down and sub Adebola Oluwo buried a powerful header late on to seal an emphatic win.

Salford were a lot of people's favourites. They have a very good squad but they didn't start well.

They are now getting into their stride and they are flying at the moment.

Oldham have a lack of quality in the final third. They are creating chances and not taking them - it is costing them games.

Defensively they have got to be better, but in the other box make sure you put the chances away.

They have the effort and endeavour, but they are lacking that quality.

There will be two minutes of additional time at the end of this one.

There should be anyway.

Jorge Grant looks for a fifth with a free-kick but his effort is kept out comfortably by Mat Hudson.

Salford's Brendan Wiredu is not done yet.

The ball comes back to the midfielder but his curling effort is always curling away from the goal.

Wiredu, who dropped a division in the summer following his move from Plymouth, has looked very comfortable tonight.

Salford's Macaulay Langstaff is given the final six minutes plus injury time off and is replaced Daniel Udoh.

Oldham win a corner after Salford keeper Will Norris takes too long to take a goal kick and the ball eventually comes back to Oliver Norburn but his deflected strike goes narrowly wide with Norris wrong-footed.

It is a brilliant delivery. It is whipped in with so much pace.

Oluwo comes on as a substitute and it is a great header. They were lining up. The delivery is brilliant.

Oldham will be disappointed because it is a free header. Defenders don't deal with it, the keeper doesn't come out, but take nothing away from the header - he just has to get it on target.

Salford are celebrating every challenge. They don't want to concede another goal.

Oldham's Mike Fondop is replaced by Favour Fawunmi.

Matt Butcher and Luke Garbutt are on for the final 12 minutes.

Off come two of Salford's goalscorers this evening Luke Molyneux and Kelly N'Mai.

A half decent chance for Oldham.

Good work from Calum Kavanagh, again and he picks out Guss Scott-Morriss but the right-back's effort is too high.

The tempo has dropped. The third goal, for Oldham, feels like a sucker-punch.

Salford had a tricky start to the season, but they are beginning to click and beginning to gel. A new manager with a new philosophy can take a bit of time, but they are certainly beginning to show their quality.

As a defensive unit they look solid, they look in good shape.

A teasing cross into the centre is met by Macaulay Langstaff but the ex-Millwall man cannot sort his feet out.

Salford, after a worryingly slow start to the campaign, are starting to click.

Kelly N'Mai is dancing outside the box and when the ball is eventually played in Oldham's Manny Monthe is stood in the right place to clear the ball.

Oldham need a bit of impetus from somewhere in this one. It's gone a little stale over the past few minutes after a bright start to the second half.

Good to see the always positive and always chatty Oldham chairman Frank Rothwell in with the home side's supporters stood behind the goal.

Cannot speak for the whims of the Oldham ownership but while, yes, league form is concerning [they beat Fleetwood in the EFL Trophy this week], Mellon's team have certainly not played poorly today. Defensively it has not been particularly great but, when in possession, they have looked useful and will be frustrated to be behind by two goals...
