Sam Burns has 200 yards into the 18th green. It's sitting nicely in the first cut.

That is spectacular! He flirts with the bunker to the left of the green but his ball takes a nice kick to the right and rolls down to 16 feet. Brave shot at a big time.

Does he have one last birdie in him? It would be some moment if he makes three.

It's definitely a chink in his armour, but to be honest this season, before this week, he was ranked 21st on the PGA Tour for putting, which is nothing to snort at.

A bogey at the last for Tommy Fleetwood means he closes his latest quest for a first major with at two over par.

Consistent with rounds of 70 71 70 and 71 this week, he has never truly been in contention.

His eyes will turn to his home town of Birkdale and The Open, less than four weeks away.

As for Xander Schauffele? Well, of course, he's finished in the top 15. As he has done at the 10 tournaments he has played at.

Even the great Scottie Scheffler just lost his cool on the 14th as he hammered his birdie putt at the hole - he's had his chance but could that be the end of his challenge?

Wyndham Clark hasn't exactly looked that solid at times and there's still some tricky holes to go - plus Scheffler birdied 15 and 16 yesterday.

Tom Kim keeps himself in the conversation by holing a nerve-jangling four-footer for par at the 15th.

Disappointment as Collin Morikawa and Matt Fitzpatrick finish up at the 18th green.

Both were within a sniff as they teed off, especially given how Wyndham Clark has come back to the field but they've not given themselves a chance.

A two-over 72 for Morikawa and a three-over 73 for Fitzpatrick leave them both out of the top 15.

Sam Burns hammers his drive at 18, but it bounds through the fairway and into the first cut.

Not the end of the world - it looks a half-decent lie - but a bit of a bad break at this late stage.

Just no authority to that putt.

It was downhill and delicate but if you're going to win these things you have to seize the moment.

He was brave with the tee shot but if he has got a weakness, it's when he is putting under huge pressure.

What happened there gives a lot of evidence to support that argument.

Wyndham Clark's long range putt for birdie shaves the right edge of the hole, it doesn't catch the lip but it's so close to hitting the target.

Pars are good for the leader though.

And after leaving so many putts short this time Scottie Scheffler guns his birdie try and that does catch the lip, but at that speed it has no chance of dropping.

To make matters worse he then misses the three footer coming back! That bogey slips him back to level par and four behind Clark with four holes to play.

Here we go, then.

One of the biggest putts of Sam Burns' career. It's actually a little longer than I first thought (deceptive camera angle etc) at nine feet but still a wonderful opportunity.

He's missed! Ohhh, what a chance that was. That wasn't even close to be honest.

We've been asked for a bit of context on why the fans are treating Wyndham Clark differently.

Can't speak for them but his behaviour at Oakmont last year when he smashed up a locker did little for his reputation.

He's had a few notable incidents since breaking through a few years ago that have not endeared him to the golfing public but in fairness he has fronted up to all of it and sought redemption.

There's probably a bit of love and support for Scottie Scheffler linked in with it as well.

We've been saying it feels a bit like an away Ryder Cup for the leader, which cannot be easy.

It's hard to convey just how slopey some of these greens are at Shinnecock Hills - just take a look at the 11th below as Scottie Scheffler putts down that huge hill...

Sam Burns holds a wedge up against the wind at 16. Good shot. He'd like it a little closer, but it's a 17-footer for birdie.

With only two holes to go after this - and given Wyndham Clark still has this hole to come - he has to give this a run, which I appreciate is easier said than done on these sun-baked greens.

Here he goes. It's in! A huge roar goes up as Burns reduces the arrears to just one. He's loving this challenge.

Ouch! Wyndham Clark is glad Scottie Scheffler's putt didn't land, as moments later his par save slides by the hole and that's a bogey for the leader - who now only leads by two shots.

Again that Clark miss is greeted by some cheers from the Shinnecock fans...

Scottie Scheffler's putt looks in for all the world, until it's not! It just runs out of steam and takes a late break away to the right and Scheffler just can't believe it - he really is running out of holes and running out of time to catch Wyndham Clark.

I think he's seen as a bit of a golf bad boy. They love a champion, they want a contest and they want Scottie Scheffler up there. He's getting all the support.
