Manchester City's defence of their Women's Super League title got off to the perfect start with a smooth victory over newly-promoted Birmingham City.

Andree Jeglertz's side, who won a domestic double last season, created countless opportunities in a strong display at the Joie Stadium.

It took them until the second half to break the deadlock but, after Mary Fowler slotted in their opener in the 49th-minute, it was a comfortable afternoon.

Khadija Shaw, last season's top scorer and PFA player of the year, stepped up afterwards, heading in two corners to get off the mark for the season.

The Jamaica striker, who signed a new deal in the summer despite being close to an exit, was wasteful for large periods and should have added to her tally.

Birmingham City were up against it but showed composure in possession, occasionally getting forward and testing Manchester City's defence.

There was a late reward for their efforts when Oceane Hurtre closed down Jade Rose and slipped the ball under goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita in stoppage time, denying Manchester City a clean sheet.

They were encouraging signs for Birmingham manager Amy Merricks but her team were comfortably beaten on the day due to a gulf in quality and experience.

Several Birmingham City players made their debut, including four in the starting XI, while England forward Beth Mead and Germany defender Carlotta Wamser came on as substitutes for the hosts in the second half.

Having watched rivals Chelsea drop points on Saturday against Aston Villa, this was an opportunity for defending champions Manchester City to make their mark.

They were just as dangerous as last season, creating countless goalscoring opportunities and dominating at home against the newly-promoted side.

England international Hemp - on her 200th Manchester City appearance - was electric down the left-hand side, Fowler was effective on the other wing and Shaw was a constant presence in the box, albeit she did miss several big chances.

It was the biggest test possible for opponents Birmingham City on their return to the WSL and they struggled to keep up.

However, they defended boldly in the first half, putting pressure on Shaw when crosses came in and blocking efforts at the back post - and they did have moments where they threatened later on.

Goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley was excellent and kept her side in it for 49 minutes - but it felt like a matter of time before Manchester City would find a breakthrough and they eased to victory.

It was the perfect way for Jeglertz's side to kickstart their season and get three points on the board.
