Keven Schlotterbeck's 89th-minute own goal ensured Wrexham claimed their first home win of the season with victory over Southampton.

It was a welcome boost for boss Phil Parkinson following a disappointing start to the season, which included a 6-0 humbling by West Ham in their previous game.

Kieffer Moore put the hosts ahead with a header in the first-half, his third goal of the campaign.

But Saints levelled when James Ward-Prowse - who rejoined the club in the summer three years after leaving for West Ham - responded five minutes after the break and looked to have earned his side a point.

But Schlotterbeck turned in Jacques Ekomie's cross as Wrexham clinched a much-needed second victory in nine games this term.

Defeat brought an end to Southampton's own six-game unbeaten league run while they are yet to win away from St Mary's Stadium in the Championship this term.

Southampton carried the greater threat for much of the game, with Finn Azaz forcing a fine save from Anthony Patterson in the opening half.

But they fell behind 10 minutes before half-time as, moments after Callum O'Hare was denied by Daniel Peretz, Moore rose highest to head Ben Whiteman's corner beyond the Southampton goalkeeper.

It extended the Saints' record of conceding in every league game so far this season.

Tonda Eckert's men levelled five minutes after the break as Ward-Prowse rifled beyond Patterson after Wrexham were unable to clear their lines.

Southampton grew in confidence and Ryan Manning fired a volley over the crossbar, with Josh Windass unable to concern Peretz with a late strike.

But the home side won it in dramatic fashion as Schlotterbeck intercepted Ekomie's cross into the Southampton six-yard box, only for the ball to loop into his own net.

Having started on the bench in the drubbing by West Ham, Moore was back in the Wrexham starting line-up.

And the Wales forward fully demonstrated his importance to Parkinson's methods.

He held up the ball well, made numerous timely defensive interventions and took his goal in typical fashion.

Moore was at his monstrous best in the memorable wins against Coventry, Sheffield United and Ipswich Town last season.

Now with three goals to his name going into the first international break of the season, the 34-year-old was fully deserving of his ovation when withdrawn in the second-half.

As for the Saints, they will likely feel they did enough to leave north Wales with all three points.

Indeed, the visitors had 67% possession, 19 shots, 11 more than Wrexham, and seven shots on target.

Cyle Larin, Ward-Prowse, Ryan Manning and Azaz all had chances as Wrexham had to dig deep at times.

But Eckert will no doubt be targeting defensive improvements after his side conceded for the eighth Championship match in succession.

If the issues at the back can be resolved, Southampton will undoubtedly be serious automatic promotion contenders. But until then, they will likely continue to come unstuck from time to time.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson told BBC Sport Wales:

"It was an enormous win for us today. First of all, I would like to thank all of the supporters for the way they got behind the team.

"The reception they gave me as I walked across the pitch was outstanding. I thought the fans were brilliant.

"It was back to basics from us. It wasn't always perfect, but we blocked things, we stopped crosses and got the ball out of our box.

"It was a gritty, determined performance, exactly the base that we needed to build back from."

Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert told BBC Radio Solent:

"It's frustrating watching the result. It's a game that you can never lose. I think we controlled the game for large amounts.

"In the end, we are talking about one corner and a flick after a long ball. There was everything in this game to win it in the second half.

"We need to take it as it is. It always hurts when you go into a break with a defeat. We are going to shake this off and go again."
