I echo everything Jobi says but I know JJ Gabriel's dad because my friend used to represent him when he was a youngster and he used to come and train with us and the dad is an alright guy. But what Jobi said was spot on. I was here at Old Trafford a year ago having a good conversation with his dad and he was telling us how well he's doing, how all the clubs wanted him, how he's moved up to Manchester. And I asked if he goes to school and he said he gets homeschooled, he's just into his football but his dad has put a lot of effort and time into him.

The kid had to make it, to be fair, the one-on-one coaching. I know a lot of parents do it these days but he's has put in a lot of effort.

I'm so surprised because a year ago he was happy here. He's 15 years of age and I don't know what's gone on. I don't know if they're not happy with the opportunities, but they have to realise he's 15 and he's at a massive club like Man United.

I was at Bolton's game with West Ham last Tuesday.

I spoke to some West Ham fans, who while they didn't celebrate getting relegated, took comfort in the knowledge there was no VAR involvement.

There is none at this stage of the EFL Cup either - or extra-time for that matter.

I'll leave it for others to decide whether it is a good thing that when the ball goes in, we will know instantly if it is a goal or not.

Or, as happened here on Sunday, if the offside flag is raised when the ball does go in, if don't have to wait for someone in a booth not to spot there is a player about a yard offside, clearly in their line of sight, who they fail to spot.

For people who aren't as close to the story or the family, it will come as a huge shock in terms of the position the kid's in. And when I use the word kid, we're talking about a 15-year-old here and it's incredible to think that people around him are making decisions that could be detrimental.

He's from an area where I'm close to a lot of people. I don't know his dad personally, but I know people around him and everyone's known about JJ for a long, long time. There's been a lot of hype, a lot of social media interest. In terms of his pathway, this has been very carefully orchestrated by his dad for him to be a professional footballer. Everything has been geared up to him getting to this point.

And it just feels strange on the eve of being involved tonight the decision, whoever's taken it, to make him not available, I find really head-scratching and wrong because that moment to play for a club as big as Manchester United, to be the youngest-ever player, would've been monumental for him but that's gone away.

Manchester United lost at the first hurdle in both domestic cup competitions last season.

The humiliation in the second round of last season's EFL Cup to League Two Grimsby won't be forgotten in a hurry, while United also lost here to tonight's opponents Brighton in the FA Cup third round.

It contributed to a 40-game season, which United do not want to repeat.

"We want to play as many games as possible," says Michael Carrick in his programme notes.

After drawing at Everton and losing to Manchester City, United could do with avoiding a loss tonight.

The huge news surrounding JJ Gabriel's impending exit is a major blow to Manchester United.

It was interesting that Shea Lacey posted a picture of himself on social media last night walking down the tunnel at Old Trafford, with a red heart emoji.

As a Liverpudlian, that is the kind of commitment Manchester United fans love.

He gets his first senior start tonight. United fans will be desperate for him to do well.

Manchester United have a problem: the more possession they have of the football, the less likely they are to win.

Under Michael Carrick, they have averaged 1.5 points-per-game when they have had more than 50% possession.

When they have had less than 50% possession, that figure shoots up to 2.6 points-per-game.

Coventry and Aston Villa sit 20th and 19th, respectively, in the Premier League with the newly promoted Sky Blues yet to score a goal or register a single point.

Villa's record hasn't been much better with one goal and one point. And that came against another newly promoted side, Hull City.

It's fair to say these are two sides very much looking to kickstart their season. Could the EFL Cup be the welcome distraction they need? Or an extra strain they could actually just do without?

Coventry boss Frank Lampard has continued to be optimistic about his side's current league situation and clearly sees the EFL Cup as an opportunity to galvanise his side.

"I'm very excited for the occasion and for the fans," he said. "We got to the Premier League for these kind of fixtures. I know this is a game that the fans hold dear and they haven't had so many of these in recent years.

"I understand the occasion and atmosphere will be big and hopefully we can tap in to that ourselves. We want to get the right result for our fans.

"We have to understand we're playing against a Premier League and a Champions League team. We're happy to have the support at home.

"It has a different feeling to what the Premier League stress brings. Cup football is great at this stage of the season to get a game that means so much to the fans, I think you should tap slightly in to the emotions of it."

Before what was intended to be a historic night at Old Trafford, Manchester United are still digesting the reality that teenage prodigy JJ Gabriel wants to leave.

The club have been left reeling at the sudden downturn in relations.

Only a week ago Gabriel scored a hat-trick on his Uefa Youth League debut at Leigh that seemed to be the prelude to becoming United's youngest player in history by making his debut against Brighton in the Carabao Cup third round this evening.

Now United are scrambling. Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox are involved in talks they hope will result in their 15-year-old reversing his plan and choosing to stay.

It feels like a forlorn task.

A belief that promises have been broken and a certainty over Gabriel's current abilities and eventual destiny mean trust is low.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Paris St-Germain are among the European heavyweight clubs monitoring the situation.
