Manchester City are open to selling midfielder Rodri but would demand more than £60m as Barcelona accelerate their interest in signing the Spain captain, sources have told BBC Sport.

The 30-year-old enters the final year of his contract at Etihad Stadium and is yet to sign a new deal, with speculation rife about his future this summer.

It looked like Real Madrid would be his next destination, but La Liga rivals Barcelona now seem to be leading the race after sources told BBC Sport on Thursday that the club had the player's approval to open negotiations with City.

Barca sources had initially told BBC Sport there were no guarantees any deal would be made but the situation now looks to be developing.

The club said on Friday they are in ongoing conversations with the player's representatives, while talks with Real had now ended.

Rodri missed much of the 2024-25 campaign after sustaining a serious knee injury, and parts of last season were disrupted by a hamstring issue.

However, the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner was back to his best at the World Cup in the summer, leading Spain to their second title and being named player of the tournament.

He is currently out of action after undergoing back surgery last month and is scheduled to link back up with his City team-mates in Manchester early next week.

Wilder continued: "The decision will have an input from me, but it's a decision for the board whether to accept the offer or not.

"Gus is ambitious and there's been a bid made by one of his former clubs where the owner really likes him, the manager speaking to him this week really likes him, and the supporters really like him.

"He has the opportunity to have a big increase on his salary, length on the contract, and going to a club where he's really highly thought of.

"If he wanted to stay here, then we would have engaged in contract negotiations, but that hasn't been the case."

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has confirmed a formal bid has been submitted for Gustavo Hamer by one of his former clubs.

The 29-year-old has been heavily linked with a return to Coventry City, who he made 132 appearances for before leaving for the Blades in 2023.

Hamer is in the last year of his current contract with Wilder confirming no new negotiations have taken place.

"I'm transparent," said Wilder in a news conference. "There has been a bid in for Gus and that is being discussed by the owners.

"Our policy as a football club is that we don't like players leaving on a free transfer, especially when we have paid a decent fee. I know his was a decent fee when we were in the Premier League.

"They are our thoughts as a club, and then there's Gus' point of view. It's about getting the right fee that is relevant to what we feel he is worth.

"Are we going to get back the money we paid for him? No, because he's in the last year of his deal. But we're not going to get rolled over."

There has been an air of mystery over Manchester United's transfer dealings this summer.

The will they-won't they go for a third midfielder is complicated by Mason Mount's outstanding form in pre-season, which is tempered by his poor injury record.

If United went with Mount and he stays fit, it could work quite well. If he doesn't, they have a problem.

If they bring in a third midfielder, when does Mount play?

A similar debate could be had around 19-year-old Shea Lacey, although the futures of Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee might shape discussion around reinforcing the forward positions.

The clear area that needs solidifying is left-back.

Partick Dorgu's pre-season appearances have been exclusively further forward, suggesting Michael Carrick doesn't view him as back-up to Luke Shaw.

Diogo Dalot has switched sides and Noussair Mazraoui has played there as well, so there are options.

But the number of games United have to play and, until last season, Shaw's patchy injury record – and the knowledge he is entering the final year of his contract – suggests someone else needs to come in.

United do like Newcastle's Lewis Hall, but the likely fee may well put them off.

Manchester United's Altay Bayindir has joined Celta Vigo on loan for the season.

Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes is set to join Arsenal.

New manager Matthias Jaissle said the decision about Guimaraes' future had already been made by the time he met the club's captain.

BBC Sport's Sami Mokbel reports that a full agreement is now almost done, with Guimaraes waiting for permission to leave Newcastle's training base in La Manga, in Spain, to finalise the formalities of his move to Emirates Stadium.

The Argentina international, 28, who signed a new four-year deal at Spurs last August, is expected to leave the club this summer.

There has also been interest from Inter Milan in signing the 28-year-old, who played all seven matches in Argentina's run to the World Cup final last month, where they lost to Spain.

But Romero is a long-term target for Atletico manager Diego Simeone, with the Spanish side believed to be pressing ahead with another attempt to sign the centre-back.

Spurs are aware of Atletico’s interest and an agreement on personal terms for the player won’t be an issue.

Spurs boss Roberto de Zerbi recently said he would "respect the will" of players if they wanted to leave.

Romero missed the end of last season with a knee injury as Spurs avoided relegation on the last day.

He was sent off twice last season as Spurs finished 17th.

Fabrizio Romano reports, external that Arsenal (yes, Spurs' arch-rivals Arsenal) have made inquiries this week about Romero's availability, but says Spurs prefer to sell abroad.

Micky van de Ven is close to agreeing a new five-year deal with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Netherlands international defender joined from Wolfsburg in 2023 on a six-year agreement that runs until 2029.

BBC Sport understands Van de Ven was considering his future in north London before the appointment of Roberto de Zerbi in March.

The arrival of the Italian manager, who helped keep Spurs in the Premier League, has been crucial in the 25-year-old's decision to seek new terms.

"It's really good that you can see the club has made some changes," Van de Ven told BBC Sport in July.

"You can see the club has a new ambition. It's something that's really important for players who have been here for a long time.

"Last season was a stressful season, unacceptable from our side, so to leave all of that behind and go into the new season fresh means a lot."
