Real Madrid, in June 2026, denied reports linking them with Bayern Munich and France winger Michael Olise.

The Spanish club say they have not had any "direct or indirect contact" with the 24-year-old or "his representatives, or individuals in his circle" following reports Madrid were considering making a bid of more than 200m euro (£173m).

"Real Madrid also wishes to highlight the excellent institutional relationship it maintains with Bayern Munich... and regrets the dissemination of speculations that do not correspond to reality," the club added in a statement.

It added that "any potential interest in a player belonging to the other club must be addressed first between the entities themselves."

Freddie in Sussex: What happened to Olise going to Real?

Real Madrid became linked with a move for Olise after reports claimed the club were interested in signing him. The speculation grew after comments made by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez during his presidential campaign where he told fans they were preparing to sign a 150 million euro player.

However, the speculation was quickly dismissed by the club who confirmed the offer was sent to Atletico Madrid for Julian Alvarez, who rejected it. Real then did something unusual and put out an official statement to deny the Olise rumours.

The statement said Real Madrid had ‘not had any direct or indirect contact’ with Olise, his representatives or anyone in his circle. The club also said it has an 'excellent institutional relationship' with Bayern Munich, explaining that both clubs have always operated with mutual respect and that any genuine interest in one another's players would first be discussed directly between the two clubs.

Exact targets are unsurprisingly being kept very closely under wraps as Newcastle United work on bringing in a replacement for departing captain Bruno Guimaraes, who is set to complete a £75m move to Arsenal.

A midfielder is a priority and, though all of Newcastle’s outfield signings to date have been aged 20 and under, there is a recognition inside the club that they need a little experience, too.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha has been heavily linked - the 25-year-old was previously on the club’s radar back in 2023 - but that one has been batted away so far.

Newcastle intend to bring in at least two more players – a midfielder and a full-back – and that number could swell to three by the time the window shuts on 1 September.

Losing Guimaraes is a particular blow, given his status as the club's talisman, but Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson suggested Arsenal had hoped to pay a smaller fee after lower sums were initially floated for a player who turns 29 in November.

However, Hopkinson recognised that Newcastle, conversely, would have liked "an even higher number" for such an influential figure.

"You're dealing with very sophisticated actors on each side," he said. "That's what negotiation looks like.

"It's a fee that satisfies us. If you want to put a merchandising spin on it, it's the highest fee for a player in that position at that age, and all those things come into play.

"Is it a good deal for Newcastle United? I believe it is, but Arsenal are getting a very special player and person. It's worked from a financial perspective for both sides."

Newcastle United sporting director Ross Wilson says the club did not plan to sell Bruno Guimaraes, but their "very emotional" captain wanted to join Arsenal.

The Premier League champions are set to complete a £75m move for the midfielder following a breakthrough in talks this week.

Although Wilson said it was "disappointing" to see Guimaraes go, he stressed the 28-year-old did not want to "play here anymore".

"What we had to weigh up was, very respectfully from Bruno with his behaviour towards us, very emotionally as well, he effectively told us he wanted to leave and move on," he said.

"That doesn't mean he can go, but it certainly plays a part in what our thinking is when we hit a certain range of number.

"There's no part in saying it was part of our strategy and was in our thinking this summer - it wasn't.

"But we have got to be flexible and react to things that happen."

Arsenal have a leadership group that supports club captain Odegaard but, with the addition of Guimaraes, they will be bringing in a player who is a natural leader.

Guimaraes became Newcastle's talisman during his time at St James' Park and, as Arteta looks to maximise every marginal gain he can, the Brazilian's ability and his way of connecting with supporters will be another weapon.

Arsenal have had campaigns seriously affected by injury, but Guimaraes has missed just 16 Premier League games since he signed for Newcastle in 2022.

And his impact is backed up by the fact Newcastle's win percentage (12.5%), points per game (0.7), average goals for (0.8) and even average goals against (1.6) all suffer in the top flight when he is not available.

Although it is an admittedly larger sample size, Opta data shows that Newcastle's win percentage (50.7%), points per game (1.7), average goals for (1.9) and average goals against (1.3) have been significantly higher when Guimaraes has featured.

Guimaraes was Newcastle's top scorer in the league last season with nine goals and he provided four assists for Brazil at the World Cup in his five starts.

Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle says a decision about Bruno Guimaraes' future had already been taken by the time he first met the club's departing captain.

Arsenal are set to complete their protracted £75m move for the midfielder after a breakthrough in discussions.

Jaissle briefly spoke to Guimaraes at the club's training camp in Spain earlier this week, but the 28-year-old went on to bid an emotional farewell to his team-mates and club staff.

"I met him quickly, but the decision was already made," Jaissle said in his first meeting with reporters following his appointment as head coach.

"It was a nice conversation. He's a fantastic player and a great human being. It's tough but for him now it's the next challenge and we need to deal with it at a later stage.

"We trust the players who are here already, but we will also see some changes."

Arsenal are set to complete their protracted move for Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes.

BBC Sport reported on 30 July that Guimaraes was expected to move to the Premier League champions following a breakthrough in talks.

And a full agreement is now almost done, with Guimaraes waiting for permission to leave Newcastle's training base in La Manga, in Spain, to finalise the formalities of his move to Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners are now making preparations for the Brazil midfielder's medical this week. There is no confirmation of a fee but sources are indicating it could reach £80m.

Guimaraes, who joined Newcastle from Lyon in 2022, has made clear his intention to join Arsenal as the 28-year-old has emerged as Mikel Arteta's first-choice central midfield target.

Newcastle and Arsenal have been discussing the finer terms of the deal this week with a final agreement now considered a formality.
