'Keeping England in the match' - Fisher reaches a first Test 50

England bowler Matthew Fisher speaking to BBC TMS: "It was obviously quick bowling so a lot of bouncers but trying to work with Sonny [Baker] and figure out a way to elongate our innings and try put an partnership together to get closer to them. Working out when to play, when to duck, when to turn the screw and when to hit an agricultural boundary or two.

"It's a different colour to any wicket I've ever played on here, it's usually a bit greener, it's a bit white than normal so there's not that massive carry you get with the County Championship games.

"A couple of days out we [Matthew Fisher and Sonny Baker] were down in the indoor school, both batting together, feeding each other on the machine.

"I think that kind of helped us know each other's game and trust each other to do what role we needed to do. He's unbelievable, his character is infectious, his attitude is amazing. Just charges in, he's a player that you want in your team. England are lucky to have someone like that to watch in the next 10 years."

It's New Zealand's game isn't it? England are going to have bat exceptionally well. I think you have to go back to that first hour of the match when England, with an inexperienced attack, lost control.

  6. 'The rewards are there if we execute'published at 18:45 BST

'A fine knock' - Nicholls brings up his 100

New Zealand batter Henry Nicholls speaking to Sky Sports: "It's obviously a great day. To bowl them out with a lead and get where we are now is what we wanted."

On replacing Kane Williamson: "It was a bit of a shock to everyone. I've been lucky enough to play a lot of my cricket with Kane. I wasn't ever going to be able to replace him. I just really enjoyed being back in Test cricket, you want to contribute. It was fun, the partnership with Rachin [Ravindra] and with Daryl [Mitchell] at the end there.

"Being out of the team for a bit, playing domestically, trying to enjoy my cricket. Last couple of years, I've played my best cricket. Having played a number of Tests I know I can play at this level."

On New Zealand domestic cricket: "The standard is incredibly high. For four or five years, the players who have come in don't look out of place. We pride ourselves on the effort and the controllables."

On the pitch: "Hopefully there is more of the up and down tomorrow. The use of the heavy roller added to that. Into that fourth innings if it's as hot again it's going to be hard for the seamers, but the rewards are there if we execute."
