It was a well executed plan, bringing Arshdeep Singh back. It was the wide yorker and Tom Banton didn't get enough on it, hitting it into the breeze.

    Banton c Varma b Arshdeep Singh 39 (Eng 118-4)

    The pressure does tell.

Wide and full from Arshdeep Singh and Tom Banton knows he has to chase it, but does so without much footwork.

He ends up driving it uppishly into the hands of Tilak Varma at deep extra cover.

    Superb stuff from Arshdeep.

  5. Eng 118-3published at 12.5 overs

Just three runs off Arshdeep Singh's over so far, and only one off the bat.

Smart bowling by the India left-arm seamer.

    Pressure building on England.

This is the critical partnership. Both players are in and are more than capable of scoring at the required rate to get us. I’m going to go ahead and say we will win by seven wickets with an over to spare or we will lose by 40.

    Chris, Hants

  7. Eng 115-3published at 12.2 overs

Jos Buttler slurps from a mug on the England balcony as India bring back left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh.

Two priceless dots to start for India.

  8. Eng 115-3published at 12 overs

Ravi Bishnoi on the receiving end of some bottom-handed biffs from Tom Banton, who clubs him over long-on for four.

Next ball, Bishnoi holds the pace off but Banton smears a square drive for another boundary.

    Smart batting.

England need 76 off 48 balls.

  9. Eng 104-3published at 11 overs

Grey clouds at Old Trafford with the flags fluttering on a gusty day in Manchester.

Tom Banton, with a hint of KP on one leg, steps across his stumps and shovels Harshit Rana's third ball through long-on for a one-bounce four.

Final ball of the over Jacob Bethell swivels and helps a short one round the corner fine for four.

    CricViz analyst

Jacob Bethell has scored 59 runs against Varun Chakravarthy in all T20s at a strike rate of 215 and is yet to be dismissed by him. That is the second-most runs Bethell has ever scored against a spinner in T20s, behind 63 runs off Gudakesh Motie.

  11. Eng 91-3published at 10 overs

    All is forgiven, Matt.

We all say things in the heat of the moment. It takes bravery to own it.

Change of ends for Harshit Rana, who will bowl the first over after drinks from the Brian Statham End.

On reflection my earlier comments were a little harsh - though I maintain trying to score runs off a ball destined to be a wide in white-ball cricket is not a great idea. I’d like to apologise to Jos and Phil.

Harry Brook and the young players are showing how to play for England. Like they actually want to be there for the team. Keep going kids.

    Jack, Cornwall

Brook plays the same in all formats, this was a good knock giving the team hope. Let’s see what Jacob Bethell can do, he’s been poor in Test cricket this summer.

    Have a bit of that.

Jacob Bethell realises it's time to up ante and hammers Varun Chakaravarthy back over his head for six.

Harry Brook's innings was what was needed to wrestle back the initiative. He was causing chaos, but unfortunately wasn't able to continue.

There is lots to like about Brook's batting, the frustration is not with his technique, more what is going on between the ears.

  17. Eng 78-3published at 9 overs

ICC president Jay Shah is picked out by the television cameras, busy texting somebody.

Presumably giving his views to the BBC Sport website on this match. Under a nom de plume, one would assume.

Jacob Bethell attempts to reverse sweep Axar Patel but misses it and Ishan Kishan whips off the bails. Bethell in his ground, though.

Just two runs off the over.

  19. Eng 76-3published at 8 overs

Tom Banton reverse sweeps Varun Chakaravarthy for four.

He attempts to do the same next ball but it's a bit edgey and the sweeper is able to gather it so has to settle for a couple.

It's the only boundary in the over as India's spinners put the brakes on.
