    Emilio Gay takes a evasive action to a couple of bumpers from Henry before the Kiwi seamer arrows one past the outside edge of the opener's bat.

    Kyle Jamieson is a real threat. He's looking the most likely at the minute for New Zealand.

    Kyle Jamieson is round the wicket to the left-handed Ben Duckett and the England opener guides it on the up through gully and point for four.

    Not an entirely risk-free shot by Duckett but England's first boundary of the afternoon from the third ball.

  6. Stokes in Durham squad

    Well, that happened quicker than anticipated...

    Ben Stokes will be in Durham's squad to play Northamptonshire in their County Championship match starting on Friday.

    The 35-year-old all-rounder has played two matches in the Championship for Durham so far this season.

    The last of those was against Kent at Beckenham in mid-May.

  7. By the way there's been no word, as of yet, on whether Ben Stokes will play for Durham against Northants in their County Championship match starting tomorrow.

    A colleague who covers cricket in the region says Durham usually announce their squad mid-afternoon the day before the match.

    We'll keep you updated on that one.

    Nat Sciver-Brunt (captain), Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey, Tilly Corteen-Coleman, Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Filer, Amy Jones (wicketkeeper), Heather Knight, Emma Lamb, Grace Potts, Ellie Threlkeld, Mady Villiers, Issy Wong.

  9. Dean left out of Test squad

    Some more England Test news.

    England have left white-ball vice-captain Charlie Dean out of their squad for the historic Test at Lord's against India next month.

    Dean, 25, who has played three Tests, is set to captain England at the ongoing T20 World Cup. with captain Nat Sciver-Brunt ruled out of the next two matches at least because of a calf injury.

    But, having had a back injury of her own at the start of the season and returning earlier than planned when Sciver-Brunt also missed the start of the summer, England have omitted Dean to manage her workload.

    The Test starts on 10 July, just five days after the T20 World Cup final and nine of England's squad for that tournament are included, including Sciver-Brunt.

    What an inane comment to say 'Joe Root is no captain' (12:46). He is managing so many new players to Test cricket against a mature team, at short notice. He is doing a supportive job with what he has!

    It's hard to judge Joe Root as captain in this test because he's a stand-in and merely following the Baz blueprint with a line-up of bowlers who aren't exactly Test match level. Nonetheless it does feel like the Caribbean 2022 all over again.

    With all due respect to Joe Root he is not captaincy material. There’s an argument to be made that Ben Stokes should be in the team for his captaincy alone.

  11. Phillips reaches his first Test hundred for New Zealand

    Bethell picks up his third wicket as he bowls Jamieson for 41

    Glenn Phillips' maiden Test hundred was arguably the salient them of the morning session.

    Were England guilty of bowling too much short stuff? Probably.

    Should they have picked a frontline spinner? Almost certainly.

    Jacob Bethell finished with 3-26 from 10 overs. Handy figures for a part-timer.

    That was a genuine opportunity for a run out. I think that took Emilio Gay by surprise, he was miles out if that had hit.

    Duckett 7, Gay 8; England trail by 376

    Out with a direct hit...

    Ben Duckett taps to mid-off and immediately sets off - it's Nathan Smith who gathers and throws down the stumps, with the ball scudding a little wide of the poles as Emilio Gay scrambled for the crease.

    Gay then sends Matt Henry's penultimate delivery neatly through long-off for four.

    That's lunch.

    Having stood at the non-striker's end for all of the opening over, Emilio Gay faces Kyle Jamieson.

    The left-hander guides the towering seamer's first ball through the covers for four - he also did that off the same bowler in England's first innings at Lord's.

    Jamieson then nips one past Gay's bat. We'll have one more over before lunch.

    Ben Duckett leans into Matt Henry's third ball to send it for four through mid-off.

    Saw the line up yesterday and sighed. Why on earth are England not playing a full-time spinner?!

    I don't know why anybody is surprised at England's inept performance. Something is seriously wrong with English cricket at the senior level. Batting collapse later today anybody?
