As a Surrey member who has seen about 20 draws at The Oval in the last few years...people need to relax. England should get 600 batting Day two and three. And I expect New Zealand to bat again for days four and five.

    Jaylo, London

New Zealand 400+, England all out for under 200. Heard it all before. Shambles.

    Alex, Tunbridge Wells

England are going to have to look to only bat once now having let New Zealand get this many. Lots of pressure on new faces to get a big score on the board.

    Josh, Pateley Bridge

  2. NZ 357-7published at 88 overs

Only one run off Jacob Bethell's over.

Just the third of 11 today without a boundary.

Very frustrating for England. There's not much in this surface now for the seamers. It doesn't seem to be gripping.

  4. NZ 356-7published at 87 overs

    Well, that's very nice.

Kyle Jamieson, looking very top-order, drives Josh Tongue through the covers for another four.

His top score in Tests is 51 not out, while Glenn Phillips has a best of 87 in this format - he has a pair of international centuries in both ODIs and T20s.

It's been a really productive morning so far for the New Zealand batters and it's helped by England's tactics with the short ball to begin with.

  6. NZ 350-7published at 86 overs

    Woops.

Emilio Gay lets Kyle Jamieson's drive break through him in the covers - that's four.

A further single off Jacob Bethell's final ball takes New Zealand to 350.

It's been a good morning for the New Zealanders. I felt with that missed opportunity yesterday with players getting 20s, 30s, 40s, they missed the chance to make a mark for their side.

If this continues for much longer, we'll have to see Jofra Archer soon.

  10. NZ 345-7published at 85 overs

    Phillips 80, Jamieson 22

A direct hit at the non-striker's end, but Kyle Jamieson is safely home after jabbing the ball to Ben Duckett at point.

That makes the tail-ender the second-highest run-scorer of the series, moving ahead of Emilio Gay.

Glenn Phillips, who leads that chart, then guides Josh Tongue's delivery between gully and point for his 15th four.

Jacob Bethell is going to come on to bowl, five overs after England took the new ball.

Hey, he took two wickets yesterday...

  11. NZ 340-7published at 84 overs

One through the covers, one through mid-wicket.

Glenn Phillips tucks away consecutive deliveries off Sonny Baker for four, moving to 76.

The last time a team batted first at The Oval, scored this many runs, and lost, was England against South Africa back in 2012.

I thought New Zealand would be lucky to get to the total they're sitting on. It's been a productive session for them, there's been all sorts happening.

  14. NZ 332-7published at 83 overs

    That's a tidy delivery.

Josh Tongue scoots one over Kyle Jamieson's off stump, slicing through the defences of the New Zealand seamer.

New Zealand were 166-4 at tea yesterday, England leaked runs in the evening session and whilst the Archer spell was fun, this morning has really undermined the effort and handed New Zealand the advantage.

    Ben, London

Why do we constantly try to bounce the lower order out? Line and length bowling is how a bowler gets the call-up in the first place.

    Paul, Finchingfield

Other than when England got skittled against Australia in the last home Ashes, has the short ball theory ever worked? I can understand against maybe a top order player as a last resort but against the tail it just seems to fly everywhere and they get 20-30 extra runs.

    Andy, Devon

  16. NZ 329-7published at 82 overs

No harm done for Kyle Jamieson - he drives Sonny Baker's final delivery confidently through the covers for four.

New Zealand have scored 38 off five overs this morning.

Jamieson threw the helmet off and gloves down in despair that it's happened again.

That's grilled Jamieson, that gives you a bit of a shudder.

  19. NZ 325-7published at 81.5 overs

Ouch, Kyle Jamieson is hit on the helmet for the second time this morning, taking Sonny Baker's delivery right in the grille.

We'll have another concussion check and helmet change.

Jamieson is 6'8, so these deliveries are getting up a fair bit.

We sensed New Zealand were going to come out and play some shots. Sonny Baker does give you that chance.
