The English Premier League is back and that means drama, lots of it.

Over the next nine months, 20 teams will travel up and down the country trying to become champions, qualify for Europe or simply stay in the league.

The season starts on Friday 21 August, when champions Arsenal play newly promoted Coventry City.

Arsenal begin the season as favourites.

They won the league last season for the first time in 22 years, and manager Mikel Arteta says the next challenge is proving they can stay at the top, he said: "Now we have to show that we belong to this level."

Arsenal have strengthened their squad too, with Bruno Guimarães, the biggest new arrival, joining from Newcastle.

Who are the other teams who could have a title challenge this season?

Manchester City are still serious title contenders. They have been one of England's strongest teams for years, but this season feels different because Pep Guardiola has left and Enzo Maresca is in charge.

They've also spent big money on England midfielder Elliot Anderson.

2025 winners, Liverpool could be the comeback story. Last season was disappointing, but new manager, Andoni Iraola, gives them a fresh start and a new way of playing.

Another big change, though, is that Mohamed Salah has left, so Liverpool need others, like Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, to share the goals.

Could Manchester United end their 14 year wait for another league title?

New manager Michael Carrick earned Manchester United more Premier League points than any other club during his the five months he was in charge last season.

If he can repeat that for a full season, United will be champions.

Chelsea have a new manager in Xabi Alonso and have added players such as Morgan Rogers (who set a transfer record for an English footballer), along with experienced players Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck.

Can they do better than last season's tenth place?

Tottenham are a bit like a player restarting their career mode on EAFC. Last season was a real scare, as they came very close to relegation.

But new manager Roberto De Zerbi has been given exciting new players, including big-money midfielders Sandro Tonali from Newcastle and Mateus Fernandes from West Ham.

Could Newcastle be in trouble after losing several key players and a manager this summer?

The three promoted clubs, Coventry, Ipswich and Hull, will know survival is their first mission.

The jump from the Championship to the Premier League is huge.

Nottingham Forest, Leeds, Fulham, Crystal Palace and Newcastle - who have sold many of their best players and lost Eddie Howe as manager - may need strong starts to stay away from danger.
