If you don't hit your spots and mix it up, Djokovic starts to read your toss and anticipates and goes half a step early. Once he starts reading your patterns, you're in big trouble.

  2. Royer holdspublished at 15:51 BST

    *Djokovic 6-3 2-1 Royer

Novak Djokovic gets to 30-30 but then overhits a backhand on both of the next two points to allow Valentin Royer to hold.

There's a definite sense that Djokovic wants to get points done and get back into the cool of the locker room.

  3. Djokovic consolidates breakpublished at 15:47 BST

    Djokovic 6-3 2-0 Royer*

Valentin Royer is chuntering away after again failing to make any inroads into Novak Djokovic's serve.

The Frenchman seems annoyed with himself but to be fair, Djokovic has been serving well today. He's made over three-quarters of his first serves and has won more than 80% of the points on them.

Djokovic is still yet to face a break point.

  4. Djokovic breaks at start of second setpublished at 15:41 BST

    *Djokovic 6-3 1-0 Royer

Valentin Royer starts the second set slowly and Novak Djokovic capitalises.

The Frenchman serves a double fault and his next serve is pounced upon by the Serb.

That puts more pressure on Royer, who coughs up another service error to hand the advantage to Djokovic.

  5. Starodubtseva forces decider against Rybakinapublished at 15:41 BST

    Starodubtseva 3-6 6-1 0-0 Rybakina*

Elena Rybakina finally gets on the board in the second set, but it feels a little too late. Even that service hold was a struggle, with Yuliia Starodubtseva forcing deuce after being 40-0 down.

The Ukrainian, in contrast, is a whole lot more ruthless. A speedy love hold and she takes us to a decider.

  6. Game and first set - Djokovicpublished at 15:34 BST

    Djokovic 6-3 0-0 Royer*

Valentin Royer flashes back a forehand return winner right out of the Novak Djokovic playbook.

But it's the only point the Frenchman wins in the game as Djokovic clinches the first set with a serve winner.

The 39-year-old will be hoping he can negotiate the rest of the match in as straightforward a fashion as he can. He is already looking a bit puffed and is taking his time to towel down between points.

  7. Starodubtseva double break uppublished at 15:33 BST

    Starodubtseva 3-6 5-0 Rybakina*

Elena Rybakina is out of sorts. It doesn't look like she's struggling with injury or illness, but some of the shots coming off her racquet are wild. All over the place.

It doesn't help that Yuliia Starodubtseva is landing some lovely winners.

The second seed had two break points to claw a break back, but Starodubtseva fights back and now she's only one game away from forcing a decider.

  9. Djokovic fails to convert set point but serving for first setpublished at 15:28 BST

    *Djokovic 5-3 Royer

A classic return from Novak Djokovic, taking the ball early and sending it down the line for a winner - how many times have we seen that over the years?

A long rally results in Valentin Royer losing patience and firing a forehand long - it's set point Djokovic.

But the Frenchman does well to dodge the danger and then sends a beautiful backhand down the line to hold.

  10. 'Bouzkova made to earn the victory'published at 15:25 BST

    Jones 0-6 6-7 (3-7) Bouzkova

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

A brilliant contest by the end of it. Jones could have easily been out of it 6-0 6-1 and that's the way it was heading but she did an unbelievable job to take it to a tie-break and almost very nearly took the second set.

She got a little tight herself when she was trying to take that second set under her belt but she certainly caused enough problems for Bouzkova.

You have to admire Jones' attitude on the court - she has a plucky spirit, she fights, she scraps and has a beautiful slice backhand. Bouzkova was certainly made to earn that victory.

  11. Boulter is only Briton left in singlespublished at 15:24 BST

    Jones 0-6 6-7 (3-7) Bouzkova

Francesca Jones' exit leaves Katie Boulter as the only British player remaining in the singles competitions at Roland Garros.

Boulter takes on 28th seed Anastasia Potapova tomorrow.

For Jones, achieving a first ever win at a Grand Slam means this will remain a memorable tournament, especially after the struggles she has had this year following her freak gym accident.

  12. Djokovic extends lead in first setpublished at 15:22 BST

    Djokovic 5-2 Royer*

Novak Djokovic is ahead but doesn't seem to be enjoying the conditions hugely. Serving into the sun, he aborts a couple of ball tosses and mutters at his box.

Yet it's another routine game for the Serb, who holds to love, and is now just one game from taking the opening set.

  13. Starodubtseva breakspublished at 15:22 BST

    Starodubtseva 3-6 3-0 Rybakina*

Elena Rybakina might have won the first set, but she's struggling out on Court Suzanne Lenglen at the minute.

The reigning Australian Open champion has hit 28 unforced errors and is playing way below her best level.

Yuliia Starodubtseva has won five of the last six games and gone a break up early in the second set.

  14. Djokovic breakspublished at 15:19 BST

    *Djokovic 4-2 Royer

A wild forehand approach shot by Valentin Royer hands Novak Djokovic three break points.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion needs just one, using all the stretchiness of his elastic body to defend before launching an attack, which results in him passing Royer and earning the first break of the match.

Francesca Jones' French Open comes to an end.

The Briton, having done so well to recover from 4-1 down in the set, double-faults on Marie Bouzkova's first match point.

It is the Czech 27th seed who rolls on.

  16. Tie-breakpublished at 15:17 BST

    *Jones 0-6 6-6 (3-6) Bouzkova

Marie Bouzkova arrives at match points after sticking away another winner.

Both of these girls have been able to respond to each other's slice shots. Some players can't do that but both of these players have the ability to knife it back.

  18. Tie-breakpublished at 15:16 BST

    Jones 0-6 6-6 (3-5) Bouzkova*

Marie Bouzkova celebrates a mis-hit by Francesca Jones, as the Czech recovers from 3-1 down to lead the tie-break with a third successive point.

Make that four. A lengthy rally is ended when Bouzkova swats a cross-court forehand out of Jones' reach.

  19. Djokovic holdspublished at 15:15 BST

    Djokovic 3-2 Royer*

No sign of Valentin Royer being overawed by the occasion.

The Frenchman gets to deuce on the Novak Djokovic serve but the three-time Roland Garros champion slams the door on danger.

  20. Tie-breakpublished at 15:13 BST

    *Jones 0-6 6-6 (3-3) Bouzkova

A miss from Marie Bouzkova gives Francesca Jones the early advantage in the tie-break, but the Briton's big swing at a forehand from the baseline doesn't pay off and the players head for the change of ends all square.
