    Mensik v Fonseca

The two players have arrived on Court Philippe Chatrier and they're about to begin their warm-up.

Jakub Mensik and Joao Fonseca have played each other only once before and that was at the 2024 Next Gen Finals, in which the best players aged 20 and under compete.

The format was slightly different for that event, with sets won by the first player to reach four games.

All five sets of their round-robin match went to tie-breaks and Fonseca won it, before going on to win the title.

    Mensik v Fonseca

Jakub Mensik might be slightly the fresher of the two players in this night-session match. He has been on court for exactly 13 hours during this tournament, compared to Joao Fonseca's 14 hours and 29 minutes.

Mensik has come through a couple of five-setters - he collapsed on court with cramp immediately after his second-round win, which he completed in four hours and 41 minutes at the height of the Paris heatwave.

Fonseca went all the way in his third-round win against Novak Djokovic, finishing in just shy of five hours, while he was on court for nearly four hours in his four-set victory over former French Open runner-up Casper Ruud on Sunday.

The cooler temperatures in Paris over the past couple of days, and of course the roof being shut on Court Philippe Chatrier, will only help the players as they dig further into their physical reserves.

There was even a hailstorm at Roland Garros earlier on. It's June!

    • The Russian eighth seed will play Marta Kostyuk in the semi-finals - Kostyuk beat fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in a deciding set to reach the last four of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.
    • In the men's draw, second seed Alexander Zverev defeated Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar in straight sets to reach the semi-finals. The German has dropped only one set in his first five matches of the tournament.

    Mensik v Fonseca

When the two players at the top of men's tennis are only aged 24 and 23 respectively, it seems strange to be talking about seeing the "next generation" in action.

However, 19-year-old Joao Fonseca and 20-year-old Jakub Mensik are two of the players that could give Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz something to think about over the next few years.

A Grand Slam quarter-final is new territory for both of these talented young players and one of them will be within two wins of a maiden major title by the end of the night session on Court Philippe Chatrier.

They should walking on court in the next few minutes.

    Jodar 6-7 (3-7) 1-6 3-6 Zverev

Alexander Zverev, speaking after reaching the French Open semi-finals: "I want to keep going and I want to be in the tournament and win the matches ahead of me and that is my goal and my aim.

"Today was a very good test about a very good player. I am happy to be in the semi-final but for now, that is it."

On opponent Rafael Jodar: "He had a perfect rhythm in the first set and I didn't, my balls were very short and I was very defensive, everything was different, the ball wasn't bouncing as high, I had to shorten my shots but he was playing amazing. I took my chances well and after that it was a good match for me."

On whether he will watch the other men's quarter-final this evening: "I will watch the match tonight, but in my room on the TV but with a nice drink in my hand. We had two days off but it is important to keep the rhythm and keep practising."

    Jodar 6-7 (3-7) 1-6 3-6 Zverev

Only two players - Novak Djokovic (124) and Jannik Sinner (93) - have won more men's singles matches than Alexander Zverev (91) at Grand Slams since 2020.

Today's victory moves Zverev level with Carlos Alcaraz.

What a match there from Zverev and the way he finished it off in style. When Jodar turned it up a bit he still kept up with it. Those were some amazing forehands.

Alexander Zverev has appeared in 10 semi-finals at Grand Slams, winning just three of them, so will be fully aware that he still has plenty of work to do.

The German will face either Czech Jakub Mensik or Brazil's Joao Fonseca in the last four.

But he fires into the net on the next point to hand over match point.

Chants of "Rafa, Rafa, Rafa," break out on Court Philippe Chatrier as the Spaniard leads 30-15 on serve. The crowd are trying to urge the 19-year-old on but there doesn't appear to be enough left in the tank as he cuts a forehand into the net.

Jodar does get the hold. Breaking Zverev has been the tricky part, though.
