More from Naomi Osaka, on the heat helping her aggressive game: "Normally I would think so but she [Siegemund] was drop-shotting me and I was trying to run forward and it was a little bit slippery, but we both have to play in the same conditions so it's whoever wins, wins on that day."

A banana skin of a first-round draw there for Naomi Osaka, without any question, she will be a very happy camper as she walks off this court knowing she got through that - and in straight sets.

She wouldn't have wanted that third set, that battle, in this heat against someone who we know battles so well.

On a bigger picture, Osaka is so good for tennis. She is a superstar. Everything about her is superstar status and it's great for the tournament that she's moving on.

  5. 'I look like the Eiffel Tower'published at 16:00 BST

    Siegemund 3-6 6-7 (3-7) Osaka

Naomi Osaka, speaking after her straight-set win over Laura Siegemund: "Honestly I felt really nervous but for me, I haven't played on this court in a little minute so it's nice to get out here and play in front of everyone. It's really hot so I hope everyone is drinking water."

On whether she feels she is improving on clay: "I hope so. I think I'm considered a veteran at this point. I hope I can play many more matches this tournament, but overall I just want to have fun and smile a lot."

On the inspiration for her outfit: "Honestly it's very couture. Funny enough, you know the Eiffel Tower at night when its sparkly? I think I look like that a little bit."

On how she will spend her day off: "Just the same old, you know the routine. Practice, get some treatment. I call my daughter and then I'll lay down and wait for the match."

Look at Osaka's service game - she's held in about 25 seconds.

Her ability to strike a tennis ball is probably second to none on the WTA tour and we saw that with the results she had in the early stages of her career. But there is a reason why she's not at the top.

The game has moved on slightly and you could argue she needs more variation as she's a bit one-dimensional.

  12. Gauff one game awaypublished at 15:45 BST

    Gauff 6-4 5-0 Townsend*

Having caused Coco Gauff plenty of problems in the first set, Taylor Townsend is now being brushed aside by her fellow American.

Gauff holds, and left-hander Townsend is now serving to stay in the match.

Naomi Osaka will be kicking herself. Three break points come and go in a game that lasted over 13 minutes. All of them were winnable but Laura Siegemund somehow stays in the rallies and Osaka is the first to crack.

The pressure is back on the former world number one to stay in the set and force a tie-break.

  15. Gauff in controlpublished at 15:39 BST

    *Gauff 6-4 4-0 Townsend

It's one-way traffic at the moment as Coco Gauff goes 0-40 up on Taylor Townsend's serve.

Townsend manages to save two of the break points but then goes long to hand over another break.

Gauff is firmly on course for round two.

  16. Gauff powering aheadpublished at 15:37 BST

    Gauff 6-4 3-0 Townsend*

Coco Gauff races to a 3-0 lead in the second set.

She has dropped just one point on serve in her first two service games of this set. Taylor Townsend needs to start making some inroads into it if she is to avoid a straight-set defeat.

  17. Gauff breaks early in second setpublished at 15:32 BST

    *Gauff 6-4 2-0 Townsend

Coco Gauff wins her opening service game of the second set to love and then comes up with a couple of brilliant passing shots on Taylor Townsend's serve.

Townsend then shovels the ball wide on an approach shot to allow Gauff a break point.

And a double fault from Townsend means the defending champion is a set and a break up.

    *Siegemund 3-6 5-5 Osaka

    Daniel Kiernan
Former British tennis player on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

I think nerves have hit Siegemund at the wrong time but the match-up of this is fascinating because I think Osaka likes that flat, fast ball that plays into her strengths where Siegemund will give you everything but that.

It will be interesting how this unfolds now.

  19. Osaka breaks backpublished at 15:24 BST

    Siegemund 3-6 5-4 Osaka*

Laura Siegemund had set point but she wastes it with an audacious drop shot attempt that fails to clear the net.

That's all the encouragement Naomi Osaka needs to win the next two points and break back.

  20. Game and first set - Gauffpublished at 15:23 BST

    *Gauff 6-4 0-0 Townsend

Having wasted a set point on her own serve, Coco Gauff finally clinches the first set with her second opportunity on Taylor Townsend's serve.

The fourth seed pumps her fist towards her box - the defending champion has her first set on the board but it took almost an hour of hard toil.
