There will be no fairytale run at Roland Garros this year for 2025 semi-finalist Lois Boisson, whose run to the last four was one of the major storylines of last year's French Open.

Russian 22nd seed Anna Kalinskaya is a 6-2 6-2 winner and through to round two.

It was wayward last shot in that last game from Fearnley and it was a poor game overall - I think he'd like to wipe the slate clean after that one.

  4. Fearnley brokenpublished at 17:29 BST

    *Fearnley 2-4 Cerundolo*

Jacob Fearnley throws in a serve-volley but it doesn't pay off - and then another double fault means he he has to face more break points.

Juan Manuel Cerundolo needs just one of them, and from a break up, Fearnley is now a break down.

  5. Easy hold for Cerundolopublished at 17:25 BST

    *Fearnley 2-3 Cerundolo

Juan Manuel Cerundolo holds serve to love. The Argentine player, who is on a five-match winning streak, has looked the more confident on serve so far.

    Fearnley 2-2 Cerundolo*

The shadows are creeping across Court 8 - no doubt offering relief from the baking heat.

Some brilliant play from Jacob Fearnley, who pushes Juan Manuel Cerundolo back and then comes up with a delicate drop shot.

But then he overhits a routine forehand to hand Cerundolo another chance to break.

However, Fearnley dodges the danger to hold for the first time in the match.

It's good to see Fearnley looking lively and proactive in this match now when so far it has been a little strange for these three games. Just one hold of serve.

When that 'double fault-itis' appeared out of nowhere for Fearnley, it has kind of lingered and it's weird how these things can happen to a player and be so hard to get rid of it.

Jacob Fearnley is the only British man left in the singles draw - he is about to begin his Roland Garros campaign against Juan Manuel Cerundolo of Argentina.

Fearnley is currently ranked 125 in the world but broke into the top 50 last year on the back of reaching the third round on his French Open debut - a run which included beating Stan Wawrinka in five sets in the first round.

But like several of the British players, the 24-year-old has struggled with injury this year, and only recently returned to action after seven weeks out with a rib injury.

Like Fearnley, Cerundolo is also 24 and also made his French Open debut last year. The Argentine player had to qualify last year but comes to Roland Garros this year in great form after winning a Challenger event on clay in Bordeaux, which helped him reach a career-high ranking of 54 earlier this month.

  13. 'I had to try' - Norrie on first-round retirementpublished at 16:52 BST

    BBC Radio 5 Live

More from Cameron Norrie on the rib problem that forced him to retire from his first-round match:

"We'll have another scan tomorrow and have a look. It was an inflamed joint which is causing everything around there to not be too happy.

"It's a really strange feeling - it's not that painful, I've been taking a lot of anti-inflammatories, and it's a bit more distraction than pain.

"The whole thing was very strange. I know I'm playing well so I can have the confidence to come back strongly on the grass."

On his preparation for the tournament: "We played very light [in practice] because we needed to save myself for a best-of-five-set match. It's a difficult one but we gave myself the best chance and my team was excellent.

"I had to try, I was here and I'm playing so well, but there were not enough to days to rest to get ready. That's life as an athlete, I thought I'd be OK but I obviously wasn't."

Norrie added that he hopes to be back in action at Queen's.

  14. Rib problem 'affecting Norrie on all shots'published at 16:45 BST

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Cameron Norrie has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about retiring from his first-round match earlier today:

"I had a problem with my rib and it started affecting me on all my shots. I didn't have the mental energy to put that aside and just play.

"I was playing really well during this whole clay season but I didn't get the results I wanted.

"I could easily have won the first set today but I don't think it was enough anyway to go and retire, or even to get through the first round and then have to retire in the second round - then I would just be pushing myself into a tough moment, so it was a difficult decision but at least it's a chance to freshen up mentally."

    Siegemund 3-6 6-7 (3-7) Osaka

More from Naomi Osaka, on the heat helping her aggressive game: "Normally I would think so but she [Siegemund] was drop-shotting me and I was trying to run forward and it was a little bit slippery, but we both have to play in the same conditions so it's whoever wins, wins on that day."

  20. Osaka the 'superstar'published at 16:07 BST

    Siegemund 3-6 6-7 (3-7) Osaka

    Daniel Kiernan
Former British tennis player on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

A banana skin of a first-round draw there for Naomi Osaka, without any question, she will be a very happy camper as she walks off this court knowing she got through that - and in straight sets.

She wouldn't have wanted that third set, that battle, in this heat against someone who we know battles so well.

On a bigger picture, Osaka is so good for tennis. She is a superstar. Everything about her is superstar status and it's great for the tournament that she's moving on.
