England have been involved in another thriller, beating New Zealand 26-19 thanks to Zoe Harrison's interception try at the death.

England head coach John Mitchell on BBC iPlayer: "It's right up there, a really tough performance by our girls. Two great rivalries with New Zealand unbeaten the whole year and we're in evolution as well. A fantastic Test match.

"We had a couple of moments where we could have finished them off but didn't and that's part of the cycle of learning at the moment.

"To put it into context the Red Roses don't play New Zealand and Canada often - it's important to learn how to win tight Test matches. The girls hung real tough. We gave New Zealand too much early possession and had to dig deep with the tackles we made.

"The message at half-time was this game will turn, we will get some possession and let's attack it. The girls took the handbrake off and tried to go to space, even from deep, and were still tenacious without the ball, which was awesome."

New Zealand head coach Whitney Hansen: "The first thing I've got to mention is how proud I am to be a Black Fern and to be in front of that group. What an amazing effort out there today and I think after a really short time of this new era of what we're putting together, we showcased amazing moments of rugby in there, we created a spectacle for everyone to watch.

"It's tough always when we don't capitalise on those moments that are there and I think there are a few today that we needed to finish and we didn't and that's the way it goes sometime, but incredibly proud of our courage.

"Particularly of Amy [du Plessis] - we didn't want to go down as a draw. After watching last week [against Canada], we knew were going to fight to the death and so I love that she threw that pass. She saw it was on and if it comes off it goes the other way.

"I think for us, win or loss we're about our performance. We've talked heaps about what does great look like - where have we achieved that and where haven't we. And so regardless of win or lose that's an incredibly important part of being a Black Fern. You're humble, you're hungry and you're looking at where you can get better regardless of how close you are to anyone."

New Zealand captain Georgia Ponsonby: "I'm just immensely proud. It was a hell of a Test match, everything we could have hoped for and more. We came so close. Gutted we came so close and fell short. What a Test match.

"We didn't get to play the Roses last year, so we're grateful we got to come up against them and test our game and see where we stood against them - man, we're bloody close!"

On New Zealand's squad: "The young talent we have coming through this group is immense. They're the future of this game and the fact we have them now and we're going to carry them with us for the next five, six, seven years - the places this team's going to go is exciting!"

On playing at Allianz Stadium: "It's incredible. To come out here, play in front of 60,000 people, it's a dream come true. It speaks volumes to the Red Roses and the fan base they've created on their own. The amount of cowboy hats, the amount of white shirts, they've done that and it's pretty inspiring to witness that."

England captain Meg Jones speaking to BBC Sport: "Facing the haka at the beginning, my whole body... it was a weird sensation. This is what living feels like. It gave us such a buzz and what an amazing atmosphere to be part of.

"I think that's one of the biggest rivalries in women's rugby. Outstanding performance from them, outstanding performance from us. We want to make this game as entertaining as possible and we showed that today.

"You always want to test where you're at. Against the top teams, you're going to be tested the most. It shows our character. I know it will make us stronger going into each game."

On the final moments: "The momentum of the game, we've got to trust the girls' instincts. We stayed in it, a little bit of luck at the end but you make your own luck. We kept pressing in defence."

On what's next for her side: "We've got a nice week at home to recover and then we're on the plane to Canada and we go again against them. We're going to grow massively from those games. Playing the best teams in the world is the best feedback."

England number eight and player of the match Maddie Feaunati: "This is like ultimate Test match, it was one of the best I've ever been in.

"We put ourselves under a lot of pressure, they put us under a lot of pressure, we put them under a lot of pressure, and I think that is the entertaining game that women's rugby is at the moment. I can say that it was fun now but during it, it was a proper Test match and yeah, really enjoyed it.

"Physical, turned us, kicked, they can play when they get space and in the end we took that space away from them.

"We train for moments like this. Those moments at the end, we train so hard and work so hard to get to those moments - it's all worth it.

"These matches bring us pressure and you also find out what you need to work on and where you're at."

Match-winner Zoe Harrison on BBC Radio 5 Live: "I nearly suffocated at the bottom of the pile-on and I was screaming for them to get off me because I still had to go and kick!"

Mererangi Paul's 70th-minute try levelled the game to set up a tense finale before Zoe Harrison secured the win for England - her interception try coming with the clock in the red.

How on earth do you unpack that?

Well, England took the lead in the 13th minute through Claudia Moloney-MacDonald.

But it was New Zealand who led at the break, up 7-12 following scores from Amy du Plessis and Ayesha Leti-I'iga.

Last weekend in Exeter, Canada captain Sophie de Goede was furious with head coach Kevin Rouet for instructing her side to kick the ball dead. She wanted to play for the win but had to settle for a 26-26 draw.

New Zealand, tied 19-19 with the clock in the red, went for the win. Zoe Harrison and England made them pay.
