Everton did the following business on transfer deadline day:

• Beto joined Serie A side Fiorentina on a permanent transfer for an undisclosed fee.
• Right-back Nathan Patterson signed for Serie A club Torino in a permanent deal.
• Winger Iliman Ndiaye joined Manchester City on a permanent deal worth £65m.
• Midfielder Tim Iroegbunam has left the club on a permanent deal to Hull City.
• England midfielder Jack Grealish has rejoined Everton on a season-long loan from Manchester City.
• Everton signed Lyon right-back Ainsley Maitland-Niles for an undisclosed fee.
• Milton Keynes Dons completed the signing of defender Elijah Campbell from the Toffees.

Although the Balogun deal did not go as planned, Everton did keep busy on transfer deadline day.

There's always some late drama on deadline day, and this summer's window was no exception.

Everton were on the hunt for a striker after Beto left Merseyside and they set their sights on Monaco's Folarin Balogun.

A deal to sign the 25 year-old seemed to be progressing nicely with a £40m fee agreed on Monday - but the deal was renegotiated because of an issue with the American's medical.

The Toffees had submitted a deal sheet before Tuesday's 23:00 deadline, but ultimately the American changed his mind and the deal fell through.

Everton reacted quickly and tried a last gasp move for Manchester United' forward Joshua Zirkzee but a deal never materialised. Sky Sports and other news outlets report that the Red Devils rejected Everton's proposal to take the Dutch striker on loan.

David Moyes now has one less striker at his disposal, until January at least.

For Balogun, yesterday's drama only adds to what has already been a hectic summer. His name was at the centre of controversy during the World Cup when Fifa decided to suspend his one-game ban.

As timelines go, turbulent doesn't really do justice to the final days of Everton's transfer window.

First, Everton CEO Angus Kinnear declared in an interview with BBC Merseyside on 18 August that the club were in a stable financial position heading towards the end of the transfer window.

Two weeks later, and with just two days of the transfer window remaining, the club accepted a £40m bid from Nottingham Forest for highly rated academy graduate Harrison Armstrong, a move that collapsed following fan backlash.

The chaotic approach continued long into deadline day.

Right-back Nathan Patterson, striker Beto and star winger Iliman Ndiaye were all allowed to leave the club.

While Patterson and Ndiaye were replaced by Lyon defender Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Manchester City midfielder Jack Grealish respectively, a £40m deal for Monaco forward Folarin Balogun collapsed.

The USA international walked away at the 11th hour despite a deal sheet being submitted amid last-gasp interest in Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee and Aston Villa striker Tammy Abraham.

The net result is that a squad that manager David Moyes desperately wanted strengthening heads into the third game of the season at home to the Red Devils with one striker, one right-back and one left-back.

Kinnear had spoken of a two-year recruitment plan following the takeover by the Friedkin Group in December 2024.

Everton have brought in some promising younger players but their net spend in this window stands at £12.35m of profit.

They end it in an arguably weaker position than when it opened nine weeks ago.

Manchester United did try to make a signing on deadline day, but had no luck.

The Red Devils failed in a move to sign Manchester City full-back Rayan Ait-Nouri on loan and also missed out on Leicester City's teenage midfielder Louis Page.

United have been trying to address a perceived weakness in Michael Carrick's defence for the latter part of the transfer window.

Having opted against pursuing deals for Barcelona's Alejandro Balde and Racing Santander's Jorge Salinas, and the transfer deadline less than 12 hours away, United decided to check if a deal was possible for Algeria's Ait-Nouri.

United sources said they were not interested in a permanent deal for Ait-Nouri and were told the only acceptable outcome for City would be a loan with an obligation to buy, which they rejected.

City sources said Ait-Nouri was staying with them.

Manchester United failed to make a deadline day signing for the first time in seven years.

In 2019, the Red Devils had what most would agree was a rather underwhelming transfer window when they signed Fred, Diogo Dalot and backup goalkeeper Lee Grant.

Since then, United had made a last-gasp signing every summer:

While Manchester City were busy on transfer deadline day, on the other side of the city, it was a little different for Manchester United.

When Enzo Maresca was appointed as Pep Guardiola's replacement in June, the Italian apologised to his former club Chelsea for the "disruption" caused by his mid-season departure.

Senior City sources had told BBC Sport at the time that they held no ill feeling towards Chelsea and that the now-resolved contractual dispute was between the Stamford Bridge club and Maresca.

And that has played out in this deal happening.

The manager was the key factor in this blockbuster deal with Maresca keen to reunite with his former Chelsea skipper.

It is understood Maresca wanted Fernandez as someone who he can fully trust and rely on, a player that is familiar with the manager's instructions, the patterns of play and does not need to be learn how to operate in the middle of the park in the system.

The 46-year-old had a similar approach when being appointed as Chelsea manager in 2023, signing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall having worked with the player at Leicester during their Championship-winning campaign.

Looking back on Friday's pre-match news conference, Maresca had hinted at a late incoming by saying he was hoping to add "a captain" to his squad before the end of the transfer window.

City have lost the experience of Bernardo Silva, John Stones and Rodri this summer, with Ruben Dias taking the captain's armband and Erling Haaland being part of the leadership group.

Fernandez adds big-game know-how to City's midfield after winning the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, being named young player of the tournament, and helping his country to a second-straight final in July.

His antics during the summer may not make him a universally popular figure but Fernandez comes across as a player that team-mates love to have alongside them and one that gets under the skin of the opposition players and supporters.

Manchester City have completed the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea for a joint-British transfer record £125m.

The Fernandez deal takes City's spending to a Premier League record £458m for a single transfer window, surpassing Liverpool's £415m from last summer.

However, City have also achieved around £300m from player sales this summer.

Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2023 for a then-British record fee of £107m, with his latest switch matching the £125m that Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak also on transfer deadline day last summer.

The clubs negotiated over the past 24 hours and reached an agreement earlier on Tuesday.

Fernandez, who had been keen to join Real Madrid earlier this summer, was booed by Chelsea fans during their friendly against Real Sociedad and again when he came on as a substitute in their Premier League opener at Fulham.

The 25-year-old was not involved in Chelsea's 4-3 Premier League win over Brighton on Sunday or their 2-0 Carabao Cup victory against Luton three days earlier, as reports in Argentina suggested he asked to be left out of the squad.

Tottenham signed winger Mykhailo Mudryk and defender Tosin Adarabioyo from Chelsea on transfer deadline day.

Mudryk joins Spurs on loan until the end of the season while 28-year-old centre-back Adarabioyo has completed a permanent move worth up to £12m to the north London side.

As part of the agreement, Spurs have the option to turn Mudryk's move permanent for £75m.

The move reunites the Ukraine international, 25, with Spurs boss Roberto de Zerbi, who was his manager at Shakhtar Donetsk before his move to Chelsea in 2023.

"It's a great feeling and I can't wait to start training and playing for the club," Mudryk said.

"I'm a player who brings speed and creativity, and I want to help in both the offensive and defensive areas. I want to make the fans excited."

Mudryk resolved a doping case with the Football Association last month, but has not played a competitive match since November 2024.

Meanwhile, Adarabioyo's move makes him Spurs' 10th signing during a busy summer that has seen them spend over £300m on transfers.

"I'm in an important part of my career and speaking to the head coach and knowing the type of football he wants to play, I think it's a very good fit," Adarabioyo said.

"He wants the team to play with courage and that's something that I always look to do. I want to achieve the absolute best, to push this team and this club as much as possible to where we deserve to be."

Crystal Palace have completed the permanent signings of experienced internationals Ben Chilwell and Quinten Timber.

England defender Chilwell returns to Selhurst Park from RC Strasbourg after spending the second half of the 2024-25 campaign on loan with the Eagles.

Netherlands international Timber arrives from Marseille and has signed a five-year deal with the Conference League winners.

Palace also signed Chile winger Dario Osorio from FC Midtjylland on a season-long loan.

"It's amazing to be back," said Chilwell, who won the FA Cup with Palace in May 2025.

"It's nice to see some familiar faces, and I'm just really excited to get back in, see the boys and the fans, and get going again."

Palace were able to complete both deals after Tuesday's 23:00 BST transfer deadline by submitting deal sheets to the Premier League.

Chilwell, who has been capped 21 times by England, has previously played for Chelsea, Leicester City and Huddersfield Town.

He spent last season with Strasbourg after joining the Ligue 1 side from Chelsea in September 2025.

Timber, 25, is the brother of Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber. He has been capped 13 times by the Netherlands and was part of their squad for this summer's World Cup.

After addressing their attack last summer when they brought in Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, United's window this time has been about midfield renewal as Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba were signed.

Is it enough to make United serious contenders after Michael Carrick took them to third place and back into the Champions League last season after succeeding Ruben Amorim in a caretaker capacity?

Unlikely.

Carrick is now in permanent charge, but this has been a mixed start to the season with defeat at newly-promoted Hull City before a 5-2 win against other Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town.

United decided not to make any late moves, leaving Carrick's squad looking more like one who will realistically challenge for the top four once more but will be nowhere near the title.

Three of the 10 most expensive signings in the history of football have happened this summer – with all of them being Premier League signings. In fact, this summer window featured four of the top flight's five most expensive ever deals.

Enzo Fernandez was the headline move, surpassing the £116m Manchester City spent earlier in the window to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, while Chelsea paid £117m to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.

Meanwhile, Liverpool paid an initial £106m, which could rise to £123m, for Paris St-Germain and France forward Bradley Barcola.

Yan Diomande's move to Real Madrid and Anthony Gordon's switch from Newcastle to Barcelona are the only deals completed so far this summer by clubs outside the Premier League to involve fees in excess of £60m.

Tottenham's acquisition of Sandro Tonali was a club-record fee which could reach £100m, while the north London club have also spent heavily on Mateus Fernandes (£85m) from West Ham and Savio from Manchester City (£75m potentially rising to £85m).

Other transfers around this range include the £85.6m deal that City struck to bring in Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille, Bruno Guimaraes' arrival at Arsenal for £75m from Newcastle, and Manchester United landing Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton for £70m.

So maybe it is not surprising then that in the compilation of the 20 most expensive transfers completed that only six were not to clubs in the English top flight.

Indeed, newly-promoted Ipswich Town have spent more on new signings than the likes of Barcelona, AC Milan, Juventus and reigning European champions PSG.
