  1. Join us on Friday...published at 00:59 BST 15 May

It's been a day for artisans rather than artists during the first round at Aronimink Golf Club.

The result is there's not much to choose between those with a share of the lead and a huge swathe of the field..

We will, of course, be back with coverage of day two of the PGA Championship on Friday with live-text commentary from 13:00 BST.

Take a look at the tee-times for day two to see when your favourite players are heading out...

If you still need a golf fix between now and the second round here's some stories which will be of interest:

  2. Smalley signs off with a parpublished at 00:57 BST 15 May

    Smalley -3 (67)

Over at the 18th, Alex Smalley is just finishing off his round.

We were facing some significant rewrites had he birdied this hole to take the solo lead but our keyboards are breathing a sigh of relief as he doesn't quite sink his 58-foot putt.

Instead, he'll finish a very satisfying round with a three-under par 67 - and a share of the lead.

  3. 'Flawless for 13 holes...'published at 00:54 BST 15 May

    Thomas -1 (69)

The 2017 and 2022 US PGA champion Justin Thomas has been reflecting on his first round score of one under:

"The front nine is definitely more gettable than the back, so that's a start. I played, I felt like, flawless in there for probably 13 holes.

"Honestly, I just had a very hard time staying focused. It's a long, long day out there. It's so, so tough - very, very windy. The pins were brutal.

"That's what's kind of cool about this place. You can push the pins a little bit and kind of make it challenging, and carry it, and they do a great job.

"Really proud of the way I played and the way I hung in there. Solid first round."

  4. 'Gives me confidence'published at 00:47 BST 15 May

    Reed -2 (68)

The 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed speaking to Sky Sports after a round of 68: "The key thing was being patient. I went out and hit a lot of greens. I played boring golf but any time going around a major championship bogey-free is always a plus, especially early in the week. It just gives you confidence."

On momentum after some wins on the European Tour earlier this season: "It's given me a lot of confidence. Playing great fields on the DP World Tour and with the way I did early in the year, it gives me confidence that what I did in the off-season has clicked.

"Anytime you get off to a fast start, you know coming into places like this with the thick rough that you can post some good numbers."

That final sentence does depend on Alex Smalley not picking up a birdie on his final hole to seize the outright lead...

  6. Scheffler makes unusual hot startpublished at 00:40 BST 15 May

    Scheffler -3 (67)

This season on the PGA Tour, Scottie Scheffler has been getting off to slow starts, averaging 70.3 shots on a Thursday. That includes a 63 in the very first event back in January at the American Express.

Friday through Sunday, he is averaging 67.6.

Ominous for everyone else in this stellar field that he has a good day today.

It is also the first time he has led or co-led after round one of a major. He's already got four to his name remember.

  7. Scheffler makes statement startpublished at 00:38 BST 15 May

    Scheffler (67), M Fitzpatrick (70), Rose (70)

Scottie Scheffler is putting from just off the front edge for a birdie and the outright lead but this isn't going to come back as far as he wants it to or it needs to.

Still, it's a stylish start for the defending champion, who taps in for par and a share of top spot on the leaderboard.

Matt Fitzpatrick looks to the heavens as his birdie putt slides past by no more than an inch or two.

Talk about mixed emotions, Justin Rose delivers a brilliant up and down to save his par.

  8. Thomas in the mixpublished at 00:38 BST 15 May

    Young +1, Bradley +4, Thomas -1 (18)

Justin Thomas will probably feel he should be a little closer to the top of the leaderboard after wrapping up with a par on the 18th.

Those two bogeys on the back nine spoiled what was otherwise a pretty decent round from the two-time winner.

You can bet your bottom dollar he'll be there or thereabouts over the next few days.

Cameron Young will need to improve if he's to push himself into contention.

  9. Postpublished at 00:32 BST 15 May

    Scheffler -3, M Fitzpatrick E, Rose E (17)

Could this be a slightly underwhelming finish? Justin Rose comes in hot after cutting one out of the right rough, past a tree blocking his path to the green and skips through the dance floor and now Scottie Scheffler comes up short.

Matt Fitzpatrick is the odd one out and will have a birdie putt from just over 20 feet.

  10. Fleetwood finishes two overpublished at 00:31 BST 15 May

    Gotterup +2, MacIntyre E, Fleetwood +2 (18)

Tommy Fleetwood wraps up his round with a par as he shoots a two-over round of 72. Robert MacIntyre is into the clubhouse for an even round of 70.

Neither player particularly happy, neither player too disappointed.

  11. Postpublished at 00:20 BST 15 May

    Scheffler -3, M Fitzpatrick E, Rose E (17)

Talk about a stroke of luck. Scottie Scheffler finds the gnarly stuff just off the 17th green from the tee but there are two sprinkler heads impeding his stance.

That allows him a free drop and he ends up being able to play from the right fringe instead.

The world number one rolls up to four feet and it looks like we could have a hat-trick of pars, with Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick both on the dance floor in one and in close after their first putts.

  12. Smalley stays with leaderspublished at 00:20 BST 15 May

    Smalley -3 (16)

Alex Smalley is still hanging around.

He may have dropped a shot at the 14th but he's seized that back two holes left thanks to a delicious wedge that left three and a half feet for birdie.

    Back alongside the leading crew.

  13. 'It got tricky - I did a good job'published at 00:17 BST 15 May

    Lowry -2 (68)

Shane Lowry speaking after his two-under 68 on day one at the US PGA Championship: "I think I just managed my way around the course. It got tricky. Everyone was kind of intrigued to see what the course was going to be like and what it was going to play like. As you see, it's playing quite difficult. And there are no low scores. Three under is the best score.

"When you get out of position, you need to try and get back in position, and you need to take your chances when you got them. I felt like I did a good job of that today.

"I was a little bit nervy at the start, to be honest. I struggled, I felt uncomfortable out there for a while. If anything, that kind of focuses me more - you're really just kind of focusing on the next shot at hand.

"I felt like I did a really good job of just staying patient, trying to make birdies when I hit good shots. If I hit bad shots, just not getting too flustered and just kind of managing my way around the course nicely."

  14. Scheffler & Fitzpatrick get their rewardpublished at 00:10 BST 15 May

    Scheffler -3, M Fitzpatrick E, Rose E (16)

Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick both get the reward of a birdie from wonderful iron play into the 16th.

Four-time major winner Scheffler plays a wede into four feet from 138 yards, while Fitzy's effort spins back but allows him to bury a putt for a timely four from 10 feet.

  15. Plenty of practice in order for McIlroypublished at 00:03 BST 15 May

Rory McIlroy has spent playing of time on the range after a difficult end to his first round at the US PGA Championship.

The Masters champion finished with four straight bogeys and said afterwards the root of his problems was not finding the fairway.

No surprise to see him with his big clubs in hand on the practice ground.

  16. Birdie finish for Lowrypublished at 23:58 BST 14 May

    Hovland +4 (74), Morikawa -1 (69), Lowry -2 (68)

A glorious approach from Shane Lowry sets up a birdie putt, which the Irishman drains from around 14 feet.

A great ending to his round but not Viktor Hovland's, who finds the left bunker and ends up carding his seventh bogey of the round.

  17. Reed & Conners finish one backpublished at 23:57 BST 14 May

    Conners -2, Reed -2 (68)

Rounding up a couple of players we've not really mentioned but have impressed today - in the glut circling beneath the leaders.

Canada's Corey Conners - a ball-striker of some renown - and 2018 Masters champ Patrick Reed are both back in the clubhouse with tidy rounds of two under par safely tucked away.

Not a shabby place to be after this tough first day.

  18. MacIntyre blunders at 16thpublished at 23:54 BST 14 May

    Gotterup +1, MacIntyre E, Fleetwood +2 (17)

Spoke too soon about Robert MacIntyre, it seems.

He follows up a biridie at the 16th with a bogey at the 17th all because he overcooked his tee shot on the pare three.

  19. Thomas drops againpublished at 23:47 BST 14 May

    Young +1, Bradley +4, Thomas -1 (15)

Justin Thomas is deep into the bunker at the 16th.

He chips out of the sand but his ball skids beyond the hole which leaves him with a 20 footer for par but he is unable to pull it off.

Two bogeys inside three holes for JT.

  20. Rose saves parpublished at 23:46 BST 14 May

    Scheffler -2, M Fitzpatrick +1, Rose E (15)

Justin Rose is chuntering to himself as he leaves his first putt on the 15th miles short.

The Englishman is putting from 10 feet to save par and in it drops. It would have been so deflating had that one not found its target after his recovery over the past few holes.

Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick also take pars and on we go.
