It's been an entertaining first day at the Scottish Open with glorious conditions in East Lothian.

Rory McIlroy took advantage of the more benign morning conditions to shoot a five-under 65, which has him among the overnight leaders.

Patrick Cantlay, Bernd Wiesberger, Tom Kim and Rasmus Hojgaard are also on that number, with the likes of Brooks Koepka and Min Woo Lee just one shot back.

World number one Scottie Scheffler is two under, while popular Englishmen Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Fitzpatrick are three under.

The 18th has been one of the more difficult holes today, so they will be pleased with that outcome.

Hojgaard joins the clubhouse leaders at five under, while Rahm will come back tomorrow battling to make the cut after shooting a 73.

Rasmus Hojgaard and Jon Rahm have had contrasting days, but both make par at 17.

Pars for all three at the par-four last.

A mixed bag from this trio today, but getting in under par, given the afternoon's tougher conditions, is not to be sniffed at.

08:39 BST is when they next tee off, and if today's scoring pattern holds, they could rocket up the leaderboard before they sit down to their lunch.

Scotland’s Calum Hill is just two shots off the clubhouse lead after an opening round of 67.

"I played nice," he told BBC Scotland. "It was a good day. I did everything well bar off the tee, I kind of hit a poor tee shot down eight and then that kind of threw off my tee balls after that.

"I kind of was struggling a little bit to get it in play but in short the rest was really good.

"There's a few pins that were kind of accessible and then it is just tricky though, there's enough rough to be annoying now, the last few years it's been a bit thinner and now you're like, I had a couple of lies out there where I couldn't even think about advancing it near the green, so it's a bit of a pain.

"I've been playing solid so like all things the same, I should play quite solid this week, so it was a decent start, I'm quite happy with."

Excellent bouncebackability from Rasmus Hojgaard, who sticks his tee shot at 17 to 13ft and holes the putt.

A birdie that puts him level with the leaders once more.

Jon Rahm has found his best stuff in the closing holes.

After a birdie at 15, he repeats the dose at 16. He'd love another one or two to finish.

It was a remarkably consistent finish for this trio.

Matt Fitzpatrick parred the final five holes, Tommy Fleetwood parred the final six holes, and Scottie Scheffler parred the final seven holes.

I say it was consistent, they may view it as a few missed opportunities.

After finding trouble off the tee, Rasmus Hojgaard makes a double-bogey six on the 16th and drops out of the lead.

A costly hole.

Ludvig Aberg has come alive on the back nine with three birdies in four holes from the 12th.

However, he gives a shot back with a three-putt bogey on the 17th.

Patrick Reed has undone much of his earlier good work with three back-nine bogeys, although he saves par in style.

Justin Thomas can't do likewise from a nasty spot high right of the green and cards a third bogey of the day.

Matt Fitzpatrick's birdie attempt is agonisingly close to dropping, just skirting past the hole.

He tidies up for a fourth at the last, no issues there.

The birdie look of Tommy Fleetwood does similarly, and he taps in for par.

Will Scottish Scheffler save his par at the last or drop a shot as he walks off? Par save it is.

That could be a big one too, as it leaves him just three off the lead and out in the early side of the draw tomorrow.

Middle of the 18th fairway for all three. Time to attack it.

Matt Fitzpatrick does just that, dropping it 16 feet from the pin.

Tommy Fleetwood goes even closer, his approach winding up nine feet away.

Can Scottie Scheffler go even closer?

Nope, he can't. 27 feet away to be exact. On the green, though.

The leader is in trouble at 16.

Rasmus Hojgaard draws a nasty lie in a bunker down the left and can only hack out over the fairway into some thick rough.

The 18th is playing as the hardest hole of the course today, at 0.340 over par, to be precise.

Only 10 birdies here today.

Jon Rahm gets his first birdie of the day, on the par-three 15th. Not that he looks overly chuffed about it.

On a miserable day for the two-times major winner, he is now four over.

We’re positioned in our dedicated live spot for broadcasting and some distance away on the course, Rasmus Hojgaard has made back-to-back birdies to take the outright lead. We heard the roar from here!

Even with the crowd starting to slowly make their way for the exits, there’s plenty here to witness the final few holes of day one.

A left-to-right look at birdie for Scottie Scheffler, but he hasn't given it enough oomph to get there, and it tails off to the right a couple of feet shy.

Tommy Fleetwood's up next, and he singes the right edge of the cup with a well-struck putt. No birdie for him either.

Nor Matt Fitzpatrick, who has a tap-in look at par.

Another trio of pars as they head to the final hole of the day.

Rasmus Hojgaard once again finds the rough off the tee, but again makes amends with a brilliant approach shot.

Six feet left for birdie... and in it goes. He's out on his own at the top.

All three knock their approaches towards the hole, and Scottie Scheffler impressively gives himself a 30-foot look at birdie from the fairway bunker.

He can't get it to drop, though.

Matt Fitzpatrick, chipping cross-handed, gets in close for a look at par.

The birdie putt of Tommy Fleetwood comes to rest next to the hole, and he taps in for par to get out of the way.

Scheffler and Fitzpatrick both walk off with a par.

Off to the par-three 17th they go.
