McLaren's Lando Norris took his first grand prix pole position of the season, beating Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton by 0.012 seconds with the final lap of the session in Hungary.

Hamilton had been fastest on the first runs, by just over 0.1secs from Norris, but neither the seven-time champion nor team-mate Charles Leclerc could improve on their final attempts.

Norris pulled out pole, following one in the sprint in Miami, in a chaotic end to the session caused by a spin at the final corner by Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The four-time champion's error affected Mercedes drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, who were forced to slow, ending up fourth and seventh.

Verstappen had got going again before Norris came around as the last driver on track to clinch pole in the upgraded McLaren.

Hamilton was a second slower on his second run than on his first, and he also faces an investigation for impeding McLaren's Oscar Piastri at Turn One after he finished his final lap.

Antonelli is another driver off to the stewards, in his case for an alleged yellow-flag infringement.

Verstappen, who railed about the unpredictable handling of the Red Bull over the radio after his spin, managed to take sixth, ahead of Russell and the second Red Bull of Isack Hadjar, Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad and Audi's Nico Hulkenberg.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who spun at the final corner in Q3 and will start sixth, speaking to Sky Sports: "My whole weekend has been bad, but in general, the car in qualifying has been really bad. Also, for whatever reason, we're picking up aerodynamic losses.

"For me, the car on entry everywhere is completely sideways, so you cannot rely at all on the rear. If you try to balance that out with the front, you start understeering. From FP3, we started having issues out of our control."

On whether Red Bull will try a different strategy on Sunday: "I mean, first we need to understand our problems, because we have so many unexplainable issues that arise all the time that we need to fix that first, before we start thinking about just having a normal qualifying or race."

We are waiting to hear the stewards' decision about Lewis Hamilton impeding McLaren's Oscar Piastri during qualifying.

Also heading to the stewards' room is Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli who allegedly failed to slow down under yellow flags.

Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur on the alleged impeding incident between Lewis Hamilton and Oscar Piastri for which the Briton is under investigation: "We will let the stewards decide. We told him but far too late. If there's a mistake, it's our mistake."

Champinship leader Kimi Antonelli, who will start fourth on the grid in Hungary: "I think, looking at the lap, I got a gust of tail wind in Turn Nine, so lost a tenth there. Then in the last corner, from the previous lap, it was a good tenth and half, because the lap before I didn't maximise the brake.

"Also, the yellow flag came while I was entering the corner, so I did try my best to lift. But also, I gave up quit a bit of speed compared to before. It was a shame, but I don't think pole psoiton. I think pretty close, like half a tenth to Lando [Norris], but not good enough for pole.

On whether missing first practice hindered his performance: "I've realised this year that with this car, it's never the best to miss FP1, because you kind of get into the rhythm. So for sure, it definitely puts you on the backfoot, especially when there are challenging conditions like this weekend. But at least they are out of the way. I don't have to worry about that for the rest of the season.

"But for sure I feel like maybe with FP1, maybe extract a little bit more from the car, also maybe set it up a bit differently. But we just tried our best and I think as a team, we did a good job.

"And now looking forward to tomorrow because the race pace looks to be good."

George Russell has said "time will tell" if Mercedes have made the right balance for the race on Sunday.

While championship leader Kimi Antonelli said it is "never best to miss FP1" after he stepped aside for Fred Vesti in first practice.

Mercedes' George Russell speaking to Sky Sports after qualifying P7, on what caused him to stop on track during the session: "We lost water pressure and I had a water leak, so when I stopped on track the car was leaking water. We don't know where it's come from. Fingers crossed it doesn't affect anything for tomorrow."

On the pace of the Mercedes compared with other cars: "I think there were clues yesterday, because we were probably further off yesterday but we had the strongest race pace, which tends to say it's not a car problem but a tyre problem. Time will tell tomorrow if we've struck the right balance between the qualifying set-up and the race set-up. We probably know we could make the car faster for the qualifying trim at the expense of race performance. Time will tell tomorrow if we've made that right balance but it's going to be difficult to overtake, would have been nice to be a bit higher up."

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, speaking to Sky Sports, after Kimi Antonelli qualified fourth and George Russell seventh: "We're all in the same conditions but today, I think Kimi [Antonelli] was a bit unlucky. And George [Russell] has been unlucky with what looks like a water leak. So it was an underwhelming session.

"When you have differences in grip levels, it's just the tyres not happy. Too cold or too hot, this is when you win or lose the sessions."

On whether Antonelli should've taken part in first practice on Friday, instead of rookie Fred Vesti: "At a certain stage every driver has to give up an FP1, so whether it is here or somewhere, it will always be a disadvantage.

"Every margin matters, and of course you want to do all sessions. But the programme is designed to to give young drivers the opportunity, and you need to take it.

Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli qualified in P4, while George Russell will start the race in seventh.

It hasn't been the best weekend for Russell who seems to have had a water leak in his Mercedes car.

McLaren's Oscar Piastri speaking after qualifying P5 for the Hungarian Grand Prix: "It was just Lewis not looking in his mirrors, the yellow flag wasn't my problem. A shame because it meant I didn't get a lap in either way. Clearly the car's been quick today, I've certainly been chasing it. It's not been easy but clearly there's performance there."

On the changing conditions: "That's definitely not helped but the wind conditions have been quite different today so it was a bit of a reset in some ways. I feel like I've been chasing it all weekend to an extent, I feel like I need a few practice sessions to get on top of things, which we don't have."

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton has been called into the stewards office at 18:00 local time for allegedly impeding Oscar Piastri's McLaren.

McLaren's Lando Norris' pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday means that he has ended Mercedes' unbeaten run of pole positions.

Between the first race in Australia and last week's Belgian Grand Prix, Kimi Antonelli has been on pole six times and George Russell has had four pole positions.

Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso, speaking to 5 Live's Jennie Gow, after qualifying P16 in Hungary: "I feel relieved a little bit, like the team understood the weaknesses of the car and this is the first step into the right direction.

"We've brought a few updates to this car. We come from two years of disappointment of upgrades, so definitely there is a change in the momentum of the whole team and the factory, so I feel optimistic.

"I have no doubts [about Aston Martin]. No-one should have doubts about Andrew Newey and the potential that we have at the factory at Silverstone.

"I think it's a matter of time before we have a top chassis in Formula 1. And I think it's a matter of time before Honda provides the best engine in Formula 1. That time, we want to make it as short as possible, that's for sure."

One driver that will be happy with their car's performance is Fernando Alonso.

He may have qualified in P16 but it is the first time this season where he has managed to get his Aston Martin out of Q1.

Aston Martin have brought big upgrades to the car, Alonso will want to make use of that and try to finish higher in Sunday's race.

What penalty could Lewis Hamilton receive for impeding Oscar Piastri? Possibly a five-place grid penalty, maybe a three?

But either way, it is going to drop him down behind Kimi Antonelli. And if the harsher penalty is given, it'll be behind at least Max Verstappen.

You could see it was on his mind when he was giving the interview. And he even said, he just didn't see the car coming.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who will start third on the grid at the Hungaroring: "Today there was quite a bit of a wind change and I don't think I did a great job anticipating it with the car set-up.

"I felt a little bit off from this morning, and qualifying has been quite messy, to be honest. We've been a little bit unlucky in Q2 with a yellow flag in the final sector and then we were trying to play catch-up.

"But the pace was never to the level of Lewis [Hamilton], so it was all about trying to maximise today, and I felt I kind of did it."

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton speaking after qualifying P2 and missing pole by 0.012 seconds: "Congratulations to Lando, it was a great lap. We've been doing a great job all weekend, I felt solid throughout qualifying. For some reason, we went out first, which I don't think was the right call, but then on top of that the grip wasn't there on that last lap for Charles and I. It's obviously a track that I love, we're obviously competitive but tomorrow's going to be a hard day.

"We were quickest all throughout qualifying so [pole] definitely got away from us. I think my mind is elsewhere right this second because once I finished my lap, I don't know if I got in the way of someone so I'm just trying to run that through my mind because I wasn't aware anyone was coming."

World champion Lando Norris, who secures pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix: "Very, very happy to be back on top. A tough, tough qualifying. Obviously these guys here were very quick, and it's been pretty tight the whole weekend. But we seemed quick from the first lap, and we've brought a few upgrades.

"It's hard to know how much it's helped in terms of lap time - but it certainly helped today. Very happy to be back on top, especially at a track where you certainly want to be on pole.

"I had confidence the whole of today. My laps in Q3 were not the best, even the one at the end, so pleasantly surprised to be on top.

"We've been doing a good job. The car has been feeling good and I've had confidence. I certainly pushed it a little bit more on the last lap - some of it paid off, some didn't - but very pleased with the team, so big thanks to them for working so hard.

"Another big job for tomorrow."
