Chris, South West London: @Alex 14:49 - although I fully admit everyone outside the top 6 is essentially one relegation away from potential disaster, I don’t get why Hull are a prime example of this. Our net spend is the lowest of the 3 promoted clubs!

  3. Ipswich re-sign Enciso on five-year dealpublished at 15:32 BST

Newly-promoted Ipswich Town have matched Hull City's summer transfer tally, announcing the signing of Julio Enciso from RC Strasbourg on a five-year contract as their 11th deal of the window.

The Paraguay international - who spent the second half of the 2024-25 season on loan at Portman Road - reunites with former Strasbourg manager Gary O'Neil.

"I am so happy to be back at Ipswich Town," Enciso told the club's official website.

"I really enjoyed my time on loan at the club and I was delighted to see them win promotion back to the Premier League last season.

"I worked with the manager in France last season and the chance to play for him again at a great club like Ipswich is one I'm very excited about.

"I can't wait to see the supporters again."

The fee was agreed last week and the paperwork completed today.

BBC Sport reporter Nizaar Kinsella said that while the fee has not been disclosed at this stage, those involved believe it will account for a sizeable portion of Ipswich's remaining transfer budget and deliver Strasbourg a substantial profit on the £7.7m they paid for him last summer.

I understand Hull remain interested in Tim Iroegbunam as his hamstring problem is only minor.

The Everton midfielder is also attracting interest from other clubs across Europe, including Italy and Germany. The 23-year-old has also caught the eye of clubs in Turkey.

It's not always about having the best players, but team unity and never-say-die-attitude. Hull have that in spades and will surprise a few teams.

There is a trend when assessing those clubs that secure survival - signing proven Premier League quality.

Leeds United signed 12 players on their return to the Premier League in 2025.

Among them was free agent Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who overcame injury problems to make his experience count for a Leeds side that also brought in Sean Longstaff from Newcastle and AC Milan's Noah Okafor.

Leeds finished the season in 14th, after winning 11 games in the Premier League.

Too many overseas players who will need to settle on the pitch and off it. Unsure why they didn't go for some more UK-based free transfers like full-back Brandon Williams, midfielder Tronstad or forward Adama Traore. Only time will tell.

Hull City have completed 11 summer signings but do not appear to be content to stop there.

They are in advanced talks over a £21m deal for Panathinaikos forward Andreas Tetteh, with Roma also interested in the Greece international, according to reporter Ekrem Konur, external on X.

  9. Sunderland reach Europe in first season back in top flightpublished at 15:01 BST

    Sunderland

Sunderland are another promoted side to have struck gold in the transfer market.

They made 15 new signings in last summer's transfer window after winning promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs, like Hull City.

Signings included Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen, Nordi Mukiele from PSG and Brighton's Simon Adingra.

Manager Regis Le Bris' side won 14 and drew 12 games to finish the season in seventh.

Sunderland will play European football in their second season in the Premier League after qualifying for the Europa League.

I've supported Hull City since 1987, and there's been plenty of times that we've proven people wrong. I'm not saying we are going to survive but I do think we've got a good chance. According to the "experts" we should be playing in League 1 not the Premier League.

  11. Forest's record number of signingspublished at 14:54 BST

    Nottingham Forest

Leicester are certainly a cautionary tale, Alec, but Nottingham Forest are a case in point that sometimes promoted clubs earn success by adopting a frenzied approach to the transfer market.

In 2022, Nottingham Forest broke the English record of the most signings made in a single transfer window, for their return to the Premier League.

They signed a total of 21 players, which included Morgan Gibbs-White, Taiwo Awoniyi and Neco Williams.

Forest finished 16th that season and have remained in the Premier League since, despite being docked four points in March 2024 for breaching profit and sustainability rules in that first season back in the top flight.

Their highest spot in the league was seventh place in 2024-25, securing a spot in the Europa League.

Hull are a prime example why the football pyramid will fall apart under the constant changing of rules. If they get relegated this season they will find themselves in Leicester position and possibly every team who tries to buy survival or promotion. Up for sale.

  13. Burnley's signings and relegationpublished at 14:45 BST

    Burnley

    Burnley-esque you say Harry?

Former manager Scott Parker was handed 14 new signings after leading Burnley into the Premier League in 2025, including Kyle Walker from Manchester City and Armando Broja from Chelsea.

However, Parker left the Clarets before the end of the campaign as they finished 19th after just four wins in the league last season and were relegated back to the Championship.

I just think Hull have had a Burnley-esque transfer window. They've signed essentially no-one of note and I can't even remotely predict how it'll go. When Leeds and Sunderland came up, you could see their style reflected in their signings. Even Ipswich and Coventry have shown some intent.

Hull City's return to the Premier League has been rewarded with an ambitious summer transfer window.

The Tigers have completed 11 new signings so far and have broken their own transfer record twice in the process:

    • Lucas Gourna-Douath (RB Salzburg - undisclosed fee)
    • Joe Gelhardt (Leeds - undisclosed fee)
    • Konstantinos Tzolakis (Olympiacos - undisclosed but around £20m plus add-ons)
    • Hidemasa Morita (Free agent)
    • Lucas Herrington (Colorado Rapids - undisclosed fee)
    • Jens Hjerto-Dahl (Tromso - undisclosed fee)
    • Oscar Zambrano (Maribor - undisclosed fee)
    • Nobel Mendy (Rayo Vallecano - undisclosed but a club record surpassing £20m)
    • Jack Butland (Rangers - undisclosed fee)
    • Matt Targett (Free agent)
    • Elliot Stroud (Mjallby AIF - undisclosed fee)

And with the Premier League back up and running in less than a week, they don't appear to be slowing down.

Manager Sergej Jakirovic confirmed to BBC Radio Humberside on Saturday that the club are chasing deals for one of three potential right-backs, plus an additional striker.

    Hull City

So they are the main headlines involving some of the Premier League's big hitters, but what about the transfer stories elsewhere in the top flight?

Hull City, one of the division's newly promoted sides, have been very busy transforming their squad from Championship play-off winners into an outfit capable of competing in the Premier League.

We will soon find out how successful they have been.

The Tigers kick off at home to Manchester United on Saturday (12:30 BST).

The question is, can they repeat the recent success of Sunderland, Leeds and Nottingham Forest, who all made waves in the transfer market after being promoted to the Premier League...

Re: Emma @13:18 - whilst I agree on a centre-back, we have Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni who have age on their side and the Ronald Araujo loan for this season so we 100% do not need Dayot Upamecano. He is just a more expensive Ibrahima Konate, someone we won't miss. Bradley Barcola adds some dynamism which we lacked under Arne Slot.

At first glance, Bradley Barcola looks like the natural successor to Luis Diaz.

Liverpool chose not to sign a direct replacement after the Colombian's departure last summer, but the underlying data suggests the Paris St-Germain forward could fill that void.

Opta's player similarity model rates the Frenchman as the winger whose output most closely resembled Diaz's across Europe's top five leagues in 2025-26 (78%), with Mohamed Salah (65%), Lamine Yamal (61%) and Vinicius Junior (61%) the next closest matches.

A closer look, however, suggests Liverpool would not simply be replacing one winger with another.

Barcola is a left winger by trade, having played almost all of his Champions League minutes for PSG on that flank, but his game is shaped by a centre-forward's instincts. He played as a striker until the age of 17, something reflected in his movement and shot selection.

Last season, he averaged 3.5 shots per 90 minutes in Ligue 1, placing him among the division's most active shooters despite operating from wide areas.

His 9.83 expected goals (xG) ranked in the 95th percentile among wingers across Europe's top five leagues, meaning only around 5% of wide players consistently found themselves in better goalscoring positions.

Barcola converted those chances into 11 league goals, outperforming his xG, while no PSG player or Ligue 1 winger recorded a higher xG total during the 2025-26 campaign.
