This is such a one-off fixture. There are so many things up against you. The team have adapted to this situation.

Before Jarell Quansah got sent off, it did surprise me England didn't have more possession.

I am sure we would have wanted more possession of the game, but it wasn't to be.

A mightily impressive win made even more impressive when you consider this...

Before tonight, Mexico had never lost a World Cup match at the Azteca Stadium (W8 D2), winning the last six in a row.

In competitive matches, they had won 70 out of 89 times, drawing 17 and losing only twice.

This was the first time Mexico conceded three goals in a match at the Azteca since August 1999 (4-3 win vs Brazil). They conceded more goals today (3) than in all their previous 10 World Cup matches at the stadium combined (2).

    On the refereeing decisions...

I think all the decisions were right. I think the referee [Alireza Faghani] did OK in spells. I loved his authority. He stood and got in the face of the players and told them to get away. On a whole, I think he got everything right.

  5. 'Tuchel has got that wrong'published at 05:12 BST

On Tuchel's comments on the referee and VAR team:

I think he has got that wrong. I don't know why he has gone so hard on that after such an impressive performance. I get it, against all the odds the red card and the penalties, but I don't think they were borderline decisions. I thought they were decent decisions in the end.

England manager Thomas Tuchel, speaking to BBC Sport: "If a team has heart and belief, then it's this team. They did it on pure will. No words. That's an iconic match, an iconic stadium. We overcame so much adversity today. Very proud.

"I didn't feel it hostile, I found it more cheering and emotional. We were aware of that but we refused to give in on a level that is absolutely admirable.

On the refereeing decisions: "It's just not good enough. The referees are just not good enough, fourth officials are just not good enough. That's the bottom line. Three people in the VAR from South America in a match like this, if this is correct, VAR overturns... is this a clear and obvious error for the penalty? For sure not. They overturned a situation where he doesn't even give a foul. Referees just not good enough, fourth officials just not good enough.

On Anthony Gordon's performance: "Absolutely brilliant today. It's not worth mentoining individual names, everyone is exhausted and knows they won a crazy match of football in a crazy atmosphere. We were up against all odds. In the end it was 11 minutes and he gave another two corners to make it 12."

On if this was the England he expects: "I think we can play much better. There's a lot we can do better. There's still a disconnect to what we actually put on the pitch in terms of football performance, ball possession, finding spaces. There's no disconnect in committing and doing what is needed to overcome anything that is thrown to this team."

On Jordan Henderson's injury: "Not good. We have a defender now with a red card, Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad."

England's Anthony Gordon, speaking to BBC Sport: "I think it probably won't kick in until this evening. To celebrate like we just did was once in a lifetime. We spoke about this being a once in a lifetime opportunity and atmosphere but it was also going to test us and it did in the worst way possible. We came through. That can't say any more about us.

"It was difficult. The alitude the first 20 minutes was difficult. We're good players, we play the top level, that's what we're paid to do. We knew it would be tough but big players, big moments.

"When we got a man sent off, I knew I'd have to be trustworthy and run more than ever. I'm a player where I want to be good at everything, whatever kind of game I'm in I can change the game. I try to do my best for the team and hopefully I've done that.

"We focus on the process, how we play, how we train. The outcome we can never control, but we can control how we react, how we train, and that's doing us well so far."

    England

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was unreal. A lot of emotions, a lot of positives. We showed resilience, showed character. It wasn't pretty at times. It just had everything that puts you on the edge of your seat, that's what football's about. It shows our togetherness and it was a special night.

"I think you saw the standard I set myself tonight in producing saves in big moments, coming for crosses, it's where I aim to be and keep improving. Big moments in big times, that's where I am.

"I'm one of the most experienced lads in the group and when called upon you've got to roll your sleeves up. It was a great game for me and that's a standard in itself."

It was an incredible performance from Pickford. I'm so, so pleased for him. Loved seeing the energy in his eyes at the end of the game, he has loved every single moment of this trip to Mexico. He is a top keeper, he has made top saves all season, he is fully capable of it, but what else he brought to the game, the fingertip saves, coming out and winning crosses. He was absolutely brilliant. When England made the decision down to ten men to sit deep and defend with their lives, Pickford led. He has played a starring role yet again in a knockout game for England.

  12. 'A bucket list memory'published at 04:54 BST

    England

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "That was unreal. You'll never get moments like that again in football.

"Come to the Azteca, it is once in a lifetime. A bucket list memory. Everyone talking about altitude. It was us against them. We rolled our sleeves up and we got the victory. It wasn't pretty, but it was bloody tough. You got to roll your sleeves up and dig in.

"It was an all-round gutsy togetherness performance. That is what we are. We're England and that's what we do.

"I was in the moment. We all know when we come into pressure situations, I have got that character where I step up and I have got that mindset where I feel unbelievable. That's why I put the hard work in on the training ground and away from the training ground. Moments like that you have got to enjoy."

On the altitude affecting the ball flight: "It was easier! It was brilliant. I loved it. We did one training session yesterday and I felt good. As soon as I felt the ball in my hands, and tonight in the warm-up. I knew I was in that moment straight away."

On his saves: "There were two good ones. You talk about being in the right position as a goalkeeper. Making that save, it was a good save, but I made it good because I was in the right position to make that save.

"To come here to the Azteca and put in a performance like that, I am proud. I was unsure whether to bring him, and I am glad I did. That's a moment he'll remember in his lifetime.

"It is great. Keep hitting numbers and keep doing stuff. It is a credit to myself. You know what my goal is I am a team player and always have been. I don't care if I let two in. As long as we live tonight. We have got the next chapter."

Jude Bellingham on his message to England fans after collecting his player of the match award: "Have another shot and text your bosses to say you're not coming in tomorrow. That's about it."

On how he thinks fans back in England are celebrating: "I can imagine it's carnage. No matter where you're from or what you do I can imagine everyone is together. That is is the thing I dream of being a part of this England squad, bringing my country together, giving them nights like this that they will enjoy for many years to come. I am so proud of this team. What we have done tonight is spectacular."

England just looked like they were enjoying the challenge.

Those moments, it must be such a buzz to be on that field. Bellingham was just sensational.

The big question - can you cope with it? The answer is yes.

  16. Bellingham 'very difficult to play against'published at 04:46 BST

You can't just rely on Kane.

You have got to make sure you're chipping in with goals from elsewhere. There is a leadership within Jude Bellingham's performance now.

I think he has had to earn the trust of Thomas Tuchel and now he feels he has got that we're starting to see big, big performances from him.

The athleticism, the power, it is very difficult to play against.

  17. 'We stuck together until the last second'published at 04:44 BST

England midfielder Jude Bellingham speaking to BBC Sport: "Hard to gather it all together really. With 10 men defending how we defended our box, being clinical how we were in their box. Big pressure moments in years gone by watching as a fan, as a kid, England probably would have crumbled but we stuck together until the last second. The players who came on, the players that started, running themselves into the ground and giving everything. That is what what this team is about.

"The atmosphere was by far the best I have played against in international football. This country as a footballing country is magnificent. The reception we had coming off the plane, although it was hostile, it was beautiful to see how passionate one country can be about their team.

"The refereeing decisions, it is what it is. It's the World Cup and they are human too. As easy as it is to say now, they are human, we made a lot more than they did, but no worries we got through."

On his first-half clearance being just as important as his two goals: "It could have been. At 2-1 the game was still there, especially when they scored. It felt like the stadium almost collapsed. So it was probably an important clearance, just as important as the goals, but this win is far more than me. It is the players that came on, the supporters who have come to Mexico and probably had a difficult journey and paid hard earned money. It is a whole country's performance."

On Norway in the next round: "It is still one game at a time. At the end of the day it is just a round of 16 win. The quarter-final Norway pose a different threat, some that we know really well, some world class players in there, so we will have to be ready. My god if you can't enjoy a night like this, just for one night, then I don't know what it's worth."

That was one of the greatest results, performances. They showed attitude, grit, desire, everything you would have wanted an England team to show they showed tonight.

Going down to 10 we knew it was going to be difficult. They sat in and I was worried that we went too deep too early, but they put their bodies on the line. The centre-backs and Pickford were outstanding.

We were the better team until the red card and then we showed a lesson in heading the ball out of the box, blocking shots, just brilliant.

  20. 'Every single one of them was superb'published at 04:37 BST

    FT: Mexico 2-3 England

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

From the off the way that England tried to manage the game, the energy and taking the game to Mexico in really difficult circumstances. Then to get the two goals, then to be hurt so soon afterwards and going into half time at 2-1.

The second half started positive but then the red card and a penalty and you thought, 'what else is going against us?' The way they stuck together and the manager's substitutions to go five at the back at the end, then Pickford was brilliant, a few great saves and coming out and taking the pressure off the defence when he could. Every single one of them was superb.
