Lea Schuller's injury-time equaliser denied Brighton a memorable victory at Leigh Sports Village but the draw means Manchester United's hopes of returning to the Champions League are virtually over.

After victories over Arsenal and Manchester City last month, FA Cup semi-finalists Brighton were about to add a a first away win at United to their impressive recent CV thanks to Jelena Cankovic's first-half goal.

Schuller's effort stopped that from happening - but it didn't do much to lift spirits in the home ranks.

It extended a run of just one win in nine games and Arsenal now require just three points from their final four games to close the door on a Champions League return for Man Utd.

The result will do little to quell the chatter around boss Marc Skinner's future, even though the man himself said on Thursday he still expects to be at the club next season.

Brighton will count themselves unlucky. They were the better side for long periods and thought Cankovic's effort was going to be enough.

The Serbia midfielder pounced on a stray pass from Manchester United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce outside the area, then beat the American with a tidy finish after darting into the box.

Madison Haley was inches away from making it two midway through the second half.

Until Schuller's late leveller, Melvine Malard had provided United's only significant threat with a low first-half shot that Chiamaka Nnadozie did well to save.

Leah Galton was part of a United side that went on a lap of appreciation after the final whistle.

The songs in Galton's honour underlined her status at a club she will leave in the summer.

Along with Ella Toone and Millie Turner, Galton is one of three remaining members of United's first professional squad in 2018.

Despite being plagued by a back problem all season, she was able to come on for the final 10 minutes to an enthusiastic ovation.

However, her exit feels symbolic as United head into an uncertain summer at the end of a season that promised so much but, since the memorable Champions League triumph over Atletico Madrid, has petered out badly.

Skinner has tried to quell the talk about his future but after such a disappointing end to the campaign, he knows improvement will be required if United are just to stand still.

In addition to the three teams destined to finish above them, the club also know a number of the clubs below are snapping at their heels, Brighton being one of them.

The Seagulls are in a wonderful place.

Indeed, after coming so close to one slice of history, next week they will attempt to carve out a more significant one by reaching the FA Cup final for the first time.

After shocking Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-finals they then stunned Manchester City to delay the champions-elect's title celebrations.

In addition, they have announced plans for a new 10,000-capacity purpose-built women's stadium next to their main ground at Falmer.

What comes next?

Manchester United play their final WSL game at Chelsea on Saturday, 16 May (13:00 BST). Brighton entertain Arsenal in the WSL on Wednesday, 6 May (19:45 BST) and take on Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final at St Helens on Sunday, 10 May (12:15 BST)
