Jonathan Varane scored only his third goal for QPR to deny Fabio Celestini a first win in charge of Championship strugglers Burnley.

Swiss head coach Celestini was on course for three points in his second game in charge of the Clarets after Largie Ramazani netted his third goal of the season.

Varane missed a great chance to equalise but later levelled thanks to an error from Burnley goalkeeper Gregoire Coudert.

It could have been worse for Burnley and their new boss as Justin Obikwu squandered an opportunity to win it in the final minute for QPR.

Regardless, Burnley have now managed just one clean sheet in 26 away league games and slipped four points below the survival line with this draw.

Burnley were devoid of confidence, despite Celestini's positivity, and it was all QPR from the start.

Harvey Vale whipped a free-kick over the Burnley wall and just wide of Coudert's left-hand post before he had a shot saved by the Frenchman.

Paul Smyth then cut inside from the right before firing a left-foot effort narrowly wide before ex-Claret Jimmy Dunne shot just over.

Burnley scored, totally against the run of play, in the 38th minute when Jamie Vardy found Ramazani 20 yards out and his early shot caught out Rangers goalkeeper Pierce Charles at his near post.

Andreas Hountondji was denied a second by a hairline offside call before, at the other end, Coudert saved well from Ronnie Edwards' drive and Varane missed a glorious headed chance.

Rangers substitute Ilias Chair fluffed a great opportunity to level when he skied his shot from fellow replacement Rayan Kolli's pull-back.

However, Burnley had dropped 18 points from winning positions this season and on 65 minutes that became 20 when Coudert made an awful goalkeeping mistake.

There was little on when Varane received the ball from Chair 20 yards out, but Coudert allowed his tame right-foot shot to beat him.

Obikwu should have won it at the death, but he dragged his right-footed shot across goal.

'We had enough big chances to win today' - reaction

QPR head coach Julien Stephan told BBC Radio London:

"I'm frustrated with the result, not with the performance. I think we started very well and in the first 20-25 minutes we had enough chances to score a minimum one or two times.

"We conceded probably from the first shot they had during the game. They shot only four times, touched the ball only five times in our box. We had 20 shots and 45 ball touches in the opponents' box.

"We were very dominant and the minimum in the second half was to score and equalise, but I think we had enough big chances to win today. That's why it's a frustration based on the result, but not a frustration based on the collective performance."

Burnley head coach Fabio Celestini told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"It was a tough game. We are very close to taking the three points, but when you see the game, I think the point is the right result for both teams.

"The spirit was there. I think when you don't have spirit, when you don't believe in what we're doing in this moment, we lose this game, but we didn't lose.

"We take one point in a tough, tough stadium, and we're happy with that. But we must improve many, many things. But first, as I said on the first day, the spirit was absolutely here today."
