    Man Utd 0-0 Roma

Manchester United have lost seven of their last 10 Champions League games (W2 D1), their worst ever run across a 10-match stretch in the European Cup/UCL.

The Red Devils have only lost three in a row in the same campaign in this competition once before, in 2004-05.

Away we go in Manchester, Barcelona and across the continent.

  3. 'Villa are more than capable of getting a result'published at 20:01 GMT

Barcelona v Aston Villa (20:00 GMT)

    Kasper Schmeichel
Former Leicester goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Aston Villa are not on the same level as the elite teams but they do have an elite manager. They are so well drilled and it's not going to be easy by any stretch of the imagination.

Unai Emery's team are going to know down to the letter what they need to do to get a result here and they are more than capable of pulling that off.

They want to see the players playing for the badge.

It's what football is all about.

You have bad games, you lose games of football, but the fans out there when it is a very difficult period for the club want [players] to show what it means to play for the club.

You just hope that these players understand that.

Not a massive protest but a symbolic one.

Manchester United fans are really not happy at present.

  8. 'Emery is an absolute genius'published at 19:58 GMT

Barcelona v Aston Villa (20:00 GMT)

    Stephen Warnock
Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live at Nou Camp

I remember when I spoke to Ezri Konsa when I was out with Aston Villa in America about the manager and the level of detail, the way you learn the game.

A lot of people talk about Pep Guardiola and the way he sees the game different. I think Unai Emery is the same calibre. Emery is just an absolute genius at what he does.

  9. Postpublished at 19:57 GMT

Manchester United v Roma (20:00 GMT)

The Champions League seems to stir something up for Manchester United's players.

It was after their 2-0 defeat by Atletico Madrid that Lisandro Martinez was critical of the club's hierarchy before United's 4-1 loss to Como sparked Bruno Fernandes' outburst against Michael Carrick and the staff.

Will there be any more loose lips in Europe this evening?

  10. Man Utd need a 'number nine'published at 19:56 GMT

Man Utd v Roma (20:00 GMT)

    Wayne Rooney
Former Manchester United striker on Amazon Prime

I think Bruno [Fernandes] is always a threat. Bryan Mbeumo always gets one or two good chances in a game, but Bruno I would say is the main threat, and I think that shows the lack of a number nine.

Mbeumo does get chances Amad Diallo does get chances but here is nowhere near clinical enough. Matteus Cuha hasn't scored enough goals [either] really.

Diallo starting again for Utd and I really don't understand why. What's wrong with Lacey, young and impressive when plays, yet not given an opportunity. Isn't that the Utd WAY?!!!

Manchester United v Roma (20:00 GMT)

Manchester United have won all four of their home matches against Roma, their joint-best 100% record at home to an opponent in major European competition.

Will the Red Devils' extend that record?

  13. 'Standards have massively dropped at Man Utd'published at 19:54 GMT

Man Utd v Roma (20:00 GMT)

    Stephen Warnock
Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live at Nou Camp

I think the standards have massively dropped at Manchester United in the last couple of years. I think Michael Carrick brought those standards up last year but for whatever reason, whether it's a lack of confident or a lack of belief in what the manager is doing lately, or whether it's a few players throwing their toys out of the pram that has got to improve.

And it's got to be from both the manager and also within the changing room. There has to be heated discussions between the players to say this is unacceptable.

Manchester United fans planned a green and gold balloon protest place as the teams came out.

You can already spot a fair few balloons in the Stretford End.

Barcelona winger Anthony Gordon has vowed to be more selfish ahead of facing Aston Villa.

The England forward is preparing for the Champions League clash on Tuesday following his summer move from Newcastle in a deal worth more than £69m.

Gordon has previously played Villa with Everton and Newcastle in the Premier League, scoring in the Magpies' 3-0 win on Boxing Day in 2024.

"They're one of the most physical teams in the league. They've got some great players," he said.

"Certain things can motivate me more than others but I try to remain the same. I try to remain consistent with my motivation. So the fact they're English doesn't make it more motivating.

"They have some great players, I know they all have had a great run as of late, so it's going to be a difficult game.

"They're the type of team that regardless of the game, they're always in the game, they wait for a moment. They seem to always be ready for any type of game, so we know it will be a tough challenge but we're excited for what's to come."

  18. 'Barcelona are favourites in this competition'published at 19:47 GMT

Aston Villa v Barcelona (20:00 GMT)

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to TNT Sports: "We are excited. Today is the highest level in football. We are ready, but of course we know that it is going to be a difficult match.

"[We] want to understand how we can try to compete, how we can exploit our capacity, our skills through the players and being organised."

On Barcelona: "Barcelona they are very competitive and favourites in this competition, so they have six points and are now playing at home after defeating PSG. They must win against us, so today, is a very good test to try to identify how we can compete when the level is high, and the opponent need to compete against us strongly."

  19. PSG aim to extend winning start to title defencepublished at 19:46 GMT

    Villarreal v Paris St-Germain (20:00 GMT)

Defending champions Paris St-Germain were involved in a thriller in their last Champions League game, beating Barcelona 4-2 at Parc des Princes.

That victory came at a cost, though, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia suffering an ACL that has ruled him out for the rest of the season, while Ousmane Dembele and Marquinhos also limped off and haven't played since.

PSG face Spanish opposition again tonight as they visit Villarreal aiming to stretch their unbeaten run in the competition to 14 games, which would match the record for a French side, set by Lyon between December 2004 and March 2006.

Villarreal have won three of their four games against French sides in European competition but since Luis Enrique took charge, PSG have gone unbeaten in their four Champions League away games against Spanish teams, winning three of them, so something will have to give.

The visitors topped the standings after winning each of their first three games, whereas Villarreal have won one and lost two so far.

Roma coach Gian Piero Gasperini is best known in this country for the nine years he spent turning Atalanta into Serie A contenders and European regulars.

Remarkably though, prior to his time at Atalanta, he was sacked after just five games in charge of Inter Milan.

His tenure included four defeats and a draw, so he understands the difficulties Michael Carrick is going through at Manchester United just now.

“I don't really know why Manchester United are experiencing the difficulties they are at the moment,” Gasperini told me last night.

“But what I do know is that Manchester United is made up of very strong players. Sometimes you go through a hard time, but then you get back on track and you start getting good results.

“I hope that is what happens to Manchester United after tomorrow obviously.”
